MONTHLY NEWS FOR THORNTON CITY EMPLOYEES

'Promt}ie
Cityd:Jvfariager$
CJJesk_,
I thought City employees might be
interested in knowing that Dennis
Shirilla, Manager of the North Valley
Shopping Center, recently released
the plans for a massive renovation
of the Center. The plans were
announced at a luncheon on August 4
hosted by the Center management for
City and County officials, local
businessment, and the press.
Mr. Shirilla, manager of the fourteen-year-old Center since last
October, stated that the renovation
was long overdue. The revamping is
scheduled to begin in September and
be completed sometime next summer.
The major drawback for the Shopping Center and the first area where
work is to begin, is the parking
lots and driveways. New parking
lots and asphalt will be installed,
along with landscaping, plants, and
an increased parking ratio, with
additional handicapped parking spaces being made available.
On the inside of the mall, the
fountain will be removed, furniture
replaced, and considerable refurbishing of the interior will be done to
modernize and improve the appearance
of the Center.
Outside work will begin in the
fall.
Interior renovations will begin after the Christmas holidays.

The City Picnic Committee would like to
thank the 80 or so people who attended the
Annual Employee Picnic on August 16.
Despite a rain shower at about the time the
picnic was scheduled to start, the weather
cleared up and everyone had a good time.

There was old fashioned
fun for everyone, with
races, .contests, and games
f or i-a'l L ages. The food
selection was great!

Special thanks go to
Mayor Margaret Carpenter, City Manager
Gerald Hagman, Utilities Director Lloyd
Gronning, and to Vic
May from the Shops
and Don Fields from
Public Works, for
donating a keg of
beer each. Only
two kegs were consumed, and the other three were cashed in
and the money will be applied to next year's
picnic, which is already in the planning
stage.
Next year's Employee Picnic will be held
in July, and scheduled for earlier in the
day--there will be plenty of fun for everyone!!!

first lab to receive certification in the

Colorado. By achieving certification, data
will be permissible as evidence in court and

Mr. WES BROWN, Chairman of the City of
Thornton Utilities Board was recently elected Treasurer of the Metropolitan Denver
Sewage Disposal District No. l Board. As
treasurer, Mr. Brown will supervise the financial records of the District. Mr. Brown
has been involved with the development of
the Thornton Municipal Water System for 26
years, a member of the initial Citizens
Committee in the early 1960 s which examined the feasibility of Thornton acquiring
the Northwest Utilities Water System, and
has served on the Thornton Utilities Board
for 14 years.
Mr. Brown was instrumental in Thornton s
purchase of the Northwest Utilities assets
and acquiring substantial interests in the
Farmers Highline Canal. To ensure an adequate water supply for the City•s future
growth, Mr. Brown has insisted on an aggresive water rights acquisition program.
D.B.

The City of Thornton and the Utilities
Board have been aggressive in meeting federal water quality guidelines and have been
supportive of the laboratory through its
funding of personnel and equipment. The
Thornton Water Laboratory is dedicated to
constant monitoring of our water quality to
assure its citizens of a safe, potable water
supply.

Special
Thanks
I would like to take time to say
thank you to Dave Bata for all the
time and effort he put forth in
making the City Employee's Picnic a
success.

Not many people are aware of the
fact that Dave was out at the picnic
grounds at 6 a.m. to reserve the
site for us, and that he personally
hauled all the tables, beer, and
soft drinks, etc., down to the site,
not to mention the pre-picnic organization.
It is unfortunate that
rain spoiled the afternoon for many,
but for those ~ho waited for the
rain to let up, it was a great picnic.

At a Utilities Board meeting held on
July 2, 1981, a resolution was adopted
recognizing the Thornton Water Quality Laboratory for obtaining microbiological, inorganic, and organic certification for
trihalomethanes from both the State of Colorado and the Environmental Protection Agency. A trihalomethane is a disinfection byproduct and a combination of free clorine
and decaying vegetation. Recent studies by
the Environmental Protection Agency have encouraged water quality laboratories throughout the State to meet the new Safe Drinking
Water Act regulations concerning trihalomethanes.

Dave is one of those employees
who tries hard to promote team-work
between employees and departments.
Once again, thanks Dave, for the
nice job you did.

\~e would like to take this opportunity to
welcome LINDA BALOGH to our Department.
Linda will be filling the Clerk II position.
She lives in Federal Heights with her husband. We are very happy to have her
aboard.
A going-away luncheon was held for KATEY
JUNE and KRISTY COOMBE on Friday, August 21.
We are very sorry to be losing both of
these great employees! Kristy worked in
our Department for the past two surrmers
and is returning to college. We want to
wish her the best. Katey is also returning to college, also, and we wish her the
best, too.
Not a lot of news this time. There is
a lot of roadwork going on in Thornton
Valley East and Thornton areas, so please
be courteous of the construction workers.
We will greatly appreciate the improved
roads when they are finished.
One note·of interest--GERRY BACKHAUS
took a day off recently to recuperate after
killing 23 rattlesnakes on his property.
(Actually, it was a day of vacation for

Gerry, wear tall boots, preferably steel

On Wednesday, August 19, everyone in the
Building Department went to a picnic at
Standley Lake. RAY KIRBY brought along his
boat and fun was had by all--especially by
those few of us who sat and watched the
others attempt to water ski! (Seriously,
we do have some pretty good skiers.) Everyone met at the lake after work, where there
was plenty of food, drink, and conversation.
It was nice to be with our co-workers outside of the office atmosphere.
We have a new inspector--DON MURPHY. He
has been in the plumbing trade for several
years, and we know he will be a real asset
· to our department. Welcome aboard, Don!

The Thrill of Victory ....
Twas the hour before noon and all through the offices,
The only creatures stirring were Dave and Art, the novices.
Their faces were full of fear and despair,
But Katey and DeGina sat calmly in their chairs.
When the clock struck twelve, off they flew,
To the Rec. Center, of course, to play tennis on Court Two.
Dave and Art played hard, but not hard enough;
They knew Katey and DeGina were strong, but didn't know how tough!
To their great surprise, they lost the first set,
They looked Zike Mickey and Goofy on the television set.
Huffing and puffing, they went down in defeat,
And now they 'U be paying us back with a lunch that can't be beat!!

/tre11ful Job,
It may not be news (it certainly
won't surprise secretaries!) that
secretaries suffer more from stress
than executives do, as measured by
the incidence of stress-related
problems, such as heart and artery
disease, high blood pressure, ulcers,
and nervous disorders. But there
are other eyebrow-raisers in the
lists below of the 12 occupations
most-and least-susceptible to stressrelated diseases, in order of
susceptibility:
MOST STRESSFUL
Laborer
Secretary
