CITY CHATTER

Vol_..._ 1 No.3

'The Voice of Thornton Em.e!_Qyees'

WAGE STUDY
As most of you probably know,
the Wage Committee made up of representatives of each department
of the City, finished many weeks
of time consuming work approximately one month ago. The Committee,
working in cooperation
with the Personnel Director, formulated a broad package of salary
and fringe benefit recommendations for the coming year.
As this package was just presented to the City Council for
their review, it is impossible to
go into too much detail at this
time. We can, however, say that
in addition to the proposed salary increases for next year, the
CoITL~ittee and the Administration
have also recommended increases
in the City's portion of health
insurance, uniform allowance for
Police and Fire, and an improved
short term disability plan coordinated with a new long term disability plan.
The Carreer Service Board~as·:
reviewed tne salary and benefit
recommendations
and
basically
approved them to the Council as
s~bmitted. Upon final approval
you will all be notified of· the
~xact details. In the meantime,
if you have any questions, check
with your Committee representative.

SURPRISE VISIT
Evelyn Utterback had a happy
surprise recently when her son,
David, was able to come home for
the week end.
David has six months left of a
4 year hitch in the Navy and is
stationed in San Diego, California.
We would like to tell you what
rank David holds but his mon can
not remember.
She could only
tell us that he is an 'electrician
and the only title he wants now
is "Mister".

FROM BOB WILSON
ON EMP LOYE E OF THE MONTH
My apologies to all of you for
the delay
in the Employee of the
Month Program.
As I indicated
to you in the first newsletter in
June, supervisors would be nominating members of their department
for
awards on
a monthly basis.
Wh ile we have received some nominations to date, not all depart
ments have coordinated on one employee to represent their department
as a whole.
Also, we had a
delay when it was decided that in
addition to three employees from
different departments in the City
making up the Awards Comm ittee,
that we would also have the Mayor
and a member of the Career Service Board to help make theselection.
Everything is firmed up at this
point and the
first Employee
of
the Month will be announced In.Sep ,
tember.
Again, my apologies- for
the delay.

DESERT SAILORS
It's hard to imagine
taking
a
sailing holiday in Nevada but
that is what Terry and Trish Cole
are
doing.
The Coles
recently
purchased
a new sail boat
and
will spend one week on Lake Tahoe
and one week at Clearlake, California.
We hear
that Trish lost some
of her enthusiasim about the boat
when they discovered that the gar
age door would have to be enlarged in order
to
accomm odate
the
boat and trailer.

THE PERFECT VACATION
Ken Standley spent his vacation with a group of Boy Scouts
at Camp st. Maiie. How's that for
relaxation?

THANK YOU VIC MAY
There.are some things in this
world that we can learn to ac
cept but a leaking faucet isnt
one of them.
-After many months of this
small irritation in the employes
lounge; the faucet has been fixed.
Vic corrected the problem with
a pocket knife and screwdriver
in about five minutes.
Ask busy people and you get it
done is a very old and true stat

COUNTY FAIR

Did you grow up as I did-looking forward eagerly each year to
the County Fair?
Remember the Ferris Wheel and
the mid-way and finally,
if the
folks could afford it or if you
could sneak in, the Rodeo.
Last week the Adams County
Fair brought back memories to
this reporter. It was all there
and just as exciting as it was
when I was a child.
The bucking horses, the steer
roping, the Brahma Bulls,and the
cotten candy. The Clowns risking their lives to protect the
thrown rider and everything that
made the County Fair, a happenfu:J
when I was a child.
Although it was well advertised and fast moving, the crowds
were not as large as was hoped.
Next year,
lets all remember
the new and beautiful Adams
County Fair grounds, less than
ten minutes from Thornton and
plan to attend.
For a real thrill,
take a
child and enjoy again the excit
ment and joy of a great ~e~~
or evening of entertainment.

ENGINEERING
As the old song g-oes "Them engineers they have no fears etc.
(For the etc, you will have to
ask elsewhere, this is a family
paper).
Seriously, our Engineering Department has ultimate responsibility in almost every technical as
pect of City Government.
They tell us where the streets
should be and how thick the pavement must be and where the property lines are located.
If the engineer makes an error
in determining
the size of a
water line someone may not have
enough water. We will not go in
to the problems inY.olved if they
design a sewer line too smallo
In any event engineering is a
very important cog in the wheels
of progress.
Plans are now in the mill to
establish a temporary modular
building
behind City Hall to
house some of the functions of
our expanding and crowded engineering department and possibly
some space
for
other equally
crowded departments.
Who will move and when it will~
transpire will be in a future
issue of this paper.

JUST GREAT

BE PATIENT

July was probably the best
month of the year for the Ivan
Clair's.
Their daughter Linda and her
family came home after·, bang overseas for almost 4 years. The Albrandt family was stationed in
Naples, Italy with Nato.
Making July complete was a
vacation trip to Wyoming.
Taking the trip with Mary Bell
and Ike was their son and family;
the Jack Clair.s,
the Don DeRenzo
family and the Albrandts.
The group took campers up to
the Faming Gorge area, with a
trip up the Green River to check
out the fishing there.
We understand that Mary Bell
and Ike took their two grandsons
up to Wyoming for a couple of
days fishing before the big trip.
They had a lot of catching up to
do after four years.

SICK CALL
Sorry to say that some City
employees have been ill.
Ernie Hafner has been in the
hospital several times this past
month and we hope that the doctors find the problem and that
Ernie is back on the job soon.
Ruth Mccullah is recovering
from surgery and hopefully will
be back at her desk before too
long.
our wishes to both Ernie and
Ruth for a speedy recovery.
We are happy to report that
Larry Gerbitz is back to work
after being in the hospital for a
short time.

Rather unexcusable was leaving

last month. This had the answers
to the safety quiz and other articals that we had wanted you to
read.
Our apologies to those r~porters whose stories did not appear
in the paper.
Hopefully this issue will be
readable and contain all pages.

Sandy Christensen has

they had purchased such a nice
looking outfit.
As if that wasn't enough,Sandy
then told us that Don had previously built a beautiful bar in
the basement.
"and all he started with was a couple of 2x4's."

THE CALL OF DUTY
Most people get away from the
job while on vacation. Not so
for Sgt. Al Rickenbrode who went
on a "auiet" trip to Steamboat
Springs and then became inbolved
in a manjunt after the shooting
of a local Police Officer.
Sgt. Rickenbrode has been commended by both the
steamboat
Springs Police and the City of
Thornton for effort above and beyond the call of duty for assisting in the search and captur of
the wanted man.

been a favorite with Sandy since
childgood and she finally to to

week.
Tickets for the show were a
birthday gift to Sandy from her
son and the entire Kailey family attended.
When it comes to love of Hope
humor Sandy says there is no generation gap in her family.

WHAT IS A METER READER?
Essays have been written extol
ing the glories fo motherhood,
Santa Claus, and dogs.
To the
best of my knowledge, no one has
until now,
taken the time to set
forth the virtues,
trials and
tribulations of a meter reader.
A meter reader,
like the proverbial mail man goes on through
rain or hail or dark of night
(more or less). He, or in some
cases she, is required to trudge
through obstacles,
strewn with
tricycles, toys and small but vigerous children. We won't mention
all the other things they put up
with on their rounds.
On one notable occasion while
bending over to read a meter, one
of
our
meter readers felt a
violent shove from the rear. As
soon as the meter reader had an
opportunity to pick his face out
of the grass, he discovered that
the culprit was a large and happy
horse who could not resist a
friendly nudge. Larry said he
thought the horse was just horsing around.

VACATION TIME

SPENDS NIGHT CHASING
How do police officers
spend
their spare time? Ask Sgt. French.
He spent the night recently
chasing hogs and other livestock.

Back to work from your vacation? City Employees and their
families did so many things that
this paper could not keep track
of who did what and where and
with whom.
Some stayed home and relaxed,
while others returned to work sun
burned and with other ailments
from uigerous outdoor activities.
Some made trips to visit relatives in far away places while as
noted elsewhere in this paper,
some had their plans interrupted
by unusual and unexpected happenings.
Whatever you did, Welcome back
to the rat race!!!
