THIS EDITION OF THE PAPER IS DEDICATED TO OUR FIRE DEPARTMENT.
THE FOLLOWING POEM•
EXPRESSES OUR FEELINGS TOWARD THE MEN OF THE ;'THORNTON FIRE DEPARTMENT11 PAST AND
PRESENT.
WHAT IS A FIREMAN?
He's the guy next door.
He's the man with the sharp memory of a little boy
who never got over the excitment of engines and sirens
and smoke and danger.
He's the guy like you and me with warts and worries
and unfilled dreams.
Yet he stands taller than most of us.

He's a fireman.

He puts it all on the line when the bell rings.
fireman is at once the most fortunate and the least
fortunate of all men.

A

He's a man who savors life because he has seen too
much death. He's a gentle man because he has seen too
much of the awesome power of violent forces out of control.
He's a man responsive to a child's laughter because his
arms have held many small bodies that will never laugh
again .
He's a man who appreciates the simple pleasures of life •••
hot coffee held in numbed, unbending fingers .•.
the flush of fresh air pumping through smoke and fire
convulsed lungs ... a Harm bed for bone and muscle
compelled beyond feeling ..• the camaraderie of brave
men ... the divine peace of self service and a job well
done in the name of all men.
He doesn't wear buttons or wave flags or shout obscenities
and when he marches, it is to honor a fallen comrade.

.'

He doesn't preach the brotherhood of men.
HE LIVES IT.

EDITOR IS COMMENT
l,s Employees of the City of Thornton we were a part of a 'First' last week when
the City Council adopted the proposed 'Salary Resolution for 1973 '.
The changing of
the City Charter by the citizens of Thornton was the beginning step.
This Charter
amendment guaranteed that employees of the City of Thornton "shall be paid salaries
equal to the prevailing wages for comparable work in the area."
The implementation
of this Charter amendment required a coordinated effort on the part of a number of
people.
The City P,dministration showed great foresight in starting early in the year by
forming a Wage Study Committee.
This Committee was made up of employees elected by
the various City Departments·ta study wages paid in the area and to recommend a
salary schedule for 1973.
The City Employees on the Com,.-nittee and the Administrative Staff, he-aded by Mr.
Wilson, spent many hours of both City and personal time in obtaining and processing
information on the prevailing wages in our area and are to be commended for the fine
job they did.
Their findings ,-1ere accepted almost without alteration by the Career
Service Board and uJ.timately by the City Council.
We can be proud to be a part of this truly democratic action.
Again, our sincere thanks to all of those who worked so hard to provide :;a fair wage for a days
work."

' FIRE DEPARTMENT'S HUMBLE BEGINNING

The City, late in 1956 or early in
1957, established a paid department and
hired Don Jones as the first full time
paid fireman. Jack Winslet and our present chief, Carl Nelson, became the 2nd
and 3rd full t Jme paid members of the
department.
The first ambulance operated by the
fire department uas given as a donation
by the Kiwanis in December 1957.

Before Thornton was an incorporated
City there was a fire department present
and in operation. Ken Freeberg tells us
that the first fire protection, in what
was to be Thornton, started in February
1954 when a group of concerned citizens
met with the officers of the Eastlake
Fire District of which this area was then
a part. The Fire District leased for the
Thornton Subdivision, a 1937 Dodge fire
truck which was kept at the homes of
various volunteers.
By spring of 1954
tbe old Dodge was traded fora 1938 Ford.
In 1955, the citizens of what is
now Thornton, petitioned out of the Eastlake Fire Dist. and took up a collection
to buy a truck of their own, which they
acquired early in 1956. They :purchased
a 1924 Seagraves. The volunteer firemen
then prevailed upon F & S Construction
Company, who built original Thornton, to
give them a piece of land on which to
build a fire house.
The City of Thornton became a reality in June 1956 and a dispute arose among the firemen whether to form a fire
district or to join the City. On Oct 12,
1956, the firemen met with the City
Council in Tom Carrillo's basement,which
was at that time the City of Thornton
council chambers, and it was agreed that
the firemen would become a part of the
City.
The firemen then sold their land
and equipment to the City for one dollar.
The land that was sold to the City is
that parcel on which the City Hall now
stands.
The old pumper was kept in one of
the volunteers driveways and when a fire
call came the volunteers would drive to
wherever the truck ·was then stored and
take off for the fire from there.
No
water could be stored in the pumper reservoir in the winter because no heated
building was available. Often the firemen would have to stop by the closest
fire plug and fill the reservoir before

The fire department recently changed
the power plant in one of their old
pumpers from gasoline to diesel.
They
are now in the process of converting the
last gasoline pumper to diesel by having
installed, by Dobbs Detroit Diesel, a
new engine, complete with an Allison
automatic transmission and power steering.
After sandblasting, the firemen will
give the truck a new paint job and other
modifications. An enclosed cab will also
be added.

FIRE PRBVI?NTICN
Remember that three elements are
required to start a fire and there are
three ways to stop it. In order to burn
a fire needs:
1. A substance that will burn.
2. Oxygen to support combustion.
3. A temperature high enough to
start the fire and keep it
burning.
The three ways to put out a fire are:
1. Remove the combustable fuel or
material.
2. Keep oxygen away by smothering.
3. Cool the fire below its ignition temperature by water or
o the r means.

BOOK REVIEW?
ALL of us are glad that in these
hectic times even busy people find time
to read.
YOU may not have heard that Elaine
Stockton and Sherry Meier are co-owners
of a paper back book that is being circulated among fellow employees.
NEVER before has this paper been ask
ed to review a popular book and the nature of this particular book makes
its
summation difficult.
WMlTED by the editor at this point
is someone qualified to review a book.
TO review this type of book is hard
to do in a family pap~r.
KNOW we all that books are not a
simple subject.
lBOUT the time you think that you
can write, someone asks you to review a
~ook with a complex subject.
:
S:CX, as we know, is not a subject a
bout which family papers write.
BUT I I LL TELL YOU ANYvJA Y, might be
the answer for some people but this paper will pass. We are not sure that the
title should even be mentioned.

HERE COME DE BRIDE
Lucille Pacifico and fiance Bill
Miller finally tied the kno-.6-on September 16th.
We have it on good nuthority
that Lucille made a beautiful bride and
a good tii:r.e was had by all at the reception. No one seems to know just
where
the happy couple went on their honeymoon
except some vague reference made to California.
We guess Lucille was afraid
the men in the Builcling Department would
panic when the paperwork started piling
up and try to find her.
Good thinking,
Lucille.

ON TFE INJURED LIST

Our thanks to Diane. Rasmussen for
the help she has given us this summer in
getting the paper out to you. Diane, we
hope that this school year will be your
best ever. Thanks again.

Once again, Officer Sidell has been
injured in the line of duty. He is very
easily recognized by his cast and crutch
es.
Injured at the same time as Officer
Sidell was Sgt. French.
He received a
bite on the hand. Just goes to show,--two legged animals often act worse than
four legged ones.

We all know that Police Officers are
always ready to offer assistance to anyone in distress---especially our men in
blue of the Thornton Police Department.
But, not so long ago, one of our gallant
officers stopped to assist a lady with a
flat tire who turned out to be a dispatcher on her way home from work. Turned out to be our own Ann Weber.

ABSENT WITH LE.AVE

GOOD AND BAD FOR THE CHIEF

The week of September 11th
found
Freda Davis on vacation and working on
her mobile home.
The week was not all
work however, as Freda and husband drove
to Eads, Colorado, to take in the local
fair and visit friends and relatives in
that area.
Genevieve Shake enjoyedher vacation
which included the Labor Day Week-end, by
having here son and family, the Jerry
Shakes, here from Coon Rapids, Iowa. They
spent most of the week just relaxing in
the moun ta ins .

We are sorry to report that Fire
Chief Carl Nelson is still on the sick
list and hope that he will be back on
the job soon.
The City recently took delivery of
a new 1972 Galaxie Ford 500 nine passenger station wagon that is to be the Fire
Chief's official car and it must be very
frustrating not to be able to work at
your job and enjoy some of the fringe
benefits.
Carl, fo l l ow your doctors orders and
take care of yourself.

$$$$$$$$$$
The heartwarming response to the
Muscular Dystrophy campaign came as a
surprise to our fire department
as
people directed by the nationwide Telethon started to bring contributions to
the fire station.
The firemen rapidly
obtained enough canisters for delivery
to canvasers and accepted contributions
from Thornton, City View,
Northglenn,
Western Hills, Sherrelwood, and Westminster. Approximately $545 was turned
in by Fireman Whitney to the Central
Bank for this worthy cause.
