'The Voice of Thornton Employees'
HOT STUFF

November 17! 1972

TAKE NOTE OF THIS

Thanks to Jon Bower of the Fire Dept.
for the huge batch of jala~eno chili he
cooked up to feed the crews on duty during the storm.
The City picked up the
tab and from there on Jon took over.
If
you happened to be one of those who stay
ed that day, you know how good it was,
and how hot. Thanks again, Jon.

The December issue of the City Paper
will come out with the 2nd paycheck of
the month instead of the last paycheck.
This will let the staff take in the
holidays without the pressure of getting
out· the paper just before Christmas.
The January issue will come out with
the last paycheck of the month.

HEAR YE!

HEAR YE!

· Ple:1c;12 r e se r vc the even Lag of December 8th to attend the City Employee's
Christmas Party to be held at Sperry's Inn.
Each employee will be able to take
one person as their guest for an evening of fun and to enjoy good company.
Festivities will start at 6:45 with dinner planned for 7:30.
There will be the
Gene McCloskey Band, Hornblower and Associates for dancing after dinner.
We
understand that this band can play just about anything you might want to hear.
Funding of the party is only partially completed but the committee is showing real ingenuity in coming up with the funds necessary so that the cost to the
employee attending will be as low as possible. It is hoped that the various departments will be able to help in this area.
The committee does need your help in determining how many people feel they
will be able to attend. Please fill out the form below and turn it in to either
Elaine Stockton, City Bookkeeper or Sherry Meier, Utility Bookkeeper, as soon as
possible.

THIS MONTH'S SAFETY TIP

WELL, IT IS OVER

WATCH OUT FOR THE SUPERHIGHWAY SNARES

Elections are over and we can reflect
on what might have been or what should
have been, but either way it is over.
Did you happen to read the article by
Mike Royko in the Denver Post on the
evening of November 14th? It was titled,
11
What a Defeated Pol Ought to Say.i;
To quote Mr. Royko, "I wish that just
once a defeated candidate would step up
to the microphone on election night and
make a concession speech something like
this:
Ladies and gentlemen, 15 minutes ago
I sent the
following telegram
to
my opponent:
'You win. Go to hell. 1
And I sent it collect.
The results are clear.
The figures
te 11 the story.
We have been beaten. 1'
Unquote.
I'm not sure what we might think of
someone who would say the above words
but it would be different.

.Merge quickly
.Move left at decision pointsentrances, exits, service areas
.Signal all passes and lane changes
.Know what to do when stalled
.Know exits in advance

FIRE DEPARTMENT TO HOST MEETING
The Thornton Fire Department
will
host the Tri-County Volunteer Firemens
Association meeting at Thornton City
Hall on the 28th of this month.
Approximately 100 men are expected to
attend this meeting and will represent
27 different fire departments from three
counties.
The Thornton Fire Department has been
a member of this association for many
years and it will be their pleasure to
host this meeting.

BITS AND PIECES
The new traffic lights at 88th Ave.
and Huron Street are now in operation
and the new lights at 92nd and Huron St.
soon will be operating. If you have ever
tried to make a turn at this corner, you
will appreciate this neHs item.
What do you do when the meter department runs out of meters? Luck out.
Work on the new treatment plant is
progressing.
This means that work has
not stopped and is not finished.
Ask
Bob Gorsline for more details.
Rome day there will be a modular
building to house some of the overflow
now in City Hall but at this time we refer you to Mr. Monson.

There are some things that every
department in the City will discuss and
cuss and generally defend with their
last breath and one of these is the
coffee made in their department. If you
don't believe it, try criticizing some
department's coffee and find out what
happens.

NICE TO HAVE YOU WITH US

THERE MUST BE A WAY

The following employees have been
certified upon completing six months:

Somewhere in the vast and sparn-wling
city are the outposts of the City of
Thornton. Manning these outposts of the
City are the men of the Maintenance Department, Water Treatment Plant,
City
Shops, Street Department and Sanitation
Crew.
The lack of good communications is
proving to be a barrier in getting news
from these departments to our readers
but we are sure that with real pioneer
spirit these men will overcome the odds.
We know the department, the familie~,
and fellow employees are doing and saying things our readers would be interest
ed in knowing and the paper is not getting the news.
Be brave, dear people, and we will
find a way to overcome, but until then
please send the news with someone coming
up- to City Hall.

HOW A BOUT THAT

Sgt. Wells has been working on day
shift for the past month or so.
He had
been on graveyard for so long it took
two weeks to wake up.

Have you had a chance to see the new•
pickups that the City took delivery
of
this past month? They are, for the most
part, replacements for worn out vehicles
but are pretty sharp.
You can tell the
drivers of the new trucks, they brag a
lot.

KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN

Our deepest sympathy to George Keil
on the death of his brother this past

We wish there was something we
could say that would help.

The City has openings from time

time in various departments in the City
and notices of these openings are posted
in various places.
Take time to read
them.
The City can't know you are interested in a job if you don't inquire.

Jim Wellman and his crew proved again
just how good this department operates
by the fine job they did during the last

Our streets were kept open

other areas.
Thanks to all the men of other depart

It is co-operation of this kind that

GIVE THIS A TRY

We have had many readers tell us that
we should include a monthly recipe
.in
the paper that is a favorite of an employee and this month we are doing it.
This is a stand-by of Sherry Meier
and once you try it you'll know why.
5 Hour Oven Stew
1-1/2 lb. lean beef, cubed
6 medium carrots, sliced
1 cup celery, cut
2 cups potatoes, quartered
1 cup tomatoes
1 tablespoon sugar
2 tablespoons Tapioca
Salt and pepper to taste
Mix all ingredients well. Cover tightly
and bake at 250° for 5-6 hours.

THE NEW LOOK
Well, progress hits the fire department again.
Captain Valasek commenced
installing a fiber-glass cab on the old
American La France pumper which will be
an asset to the department.
This wil 1 be the last pumper to be
converted to a closed cab.
Originally,
all had open cabs and were not the most
comfortable means of transportation
in
bad weather.

The follouing prayer was obtained by Dee Rankle from Bob Wells and we think
that it speaks for itself.
PRAYER OF A FATHER
Build me a son, oh Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak,
and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid.
One who will be proud and
unbending in defeat •.. but humble and gentle in victory ... a son who will know
that to know himself. .. is the foundation stone of all true knowledge. Rear him,
I pray ... not in the paths of ease and comfort ... but under the stress and spur of
difficulties and challenges. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm ... here
let him learn compassion for those who fail.
Build me a son who will master
himself before he seeks to master other men.
Build me a son whose heart will
be clean ... whose goal will be high. One who will learn to laugh ... yet never for
get how to weep. One who will reach into the future ... yet never forget the past.
And after all these are his ..• add ... I pray .•. enough of a sense of humor so that
he may always be serious •.. yet never take himself too seriously •.. a touch of
humility so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness ... the
open mind of true wisdom ... the meekness of true strength. Then ... I. .. his father
will dare in the scared recesses of my own heart ..• to whisper ..• "! have not
lived in vain"~!
