Recently observed was the quick and
efficient response of our Fire Dept.
Ambulance Crew to an emergency call, and
though few of us may have occasion to
call upon them as an everyday occurance,
it's a secure feeling to know how well
they do respond, should the need arise.
In this observer's opinion, they are
the BEST, and they project an image o~
which every City Employee should
be
proud.

CITY BLOOD PROGRAM
Interest has been expressed in starting a City of Thornton Volunteer Blood
Donor Program.
A successful program would
enable our City to maintain a constan½
supply of blood which would be made available, free to any employee in the event of
an emergency.
In order to establish an active blood donor club, we would have to maintain~
minimum of ten blood donations monthly.
If you are interested in becoming a member
of our club and donating, please call Sandy Christensen or fill out the slip below
and see that it gets to Sandy.

I would be interested in being a member of a City of Thornton Blood Donor Program.

ARE YOU TIRED?

OUR SYMPATHY

If you've been wondering lately why
you're so tired, says Capsuled Comments,
here's why.
"No matter how tired you may be, your
exhaustion is fully justified, as can be
proven by simple arithmetic.
The U.S. has a population of 200 million. Of these,
72 million are over 65
years old, leaving 128 million to do the
work.
When you subtract the 75 million
people under 21, you get 53 million.
There are also 24 million employed by
the Federal Government, which leaves 29
million to do the work.
The 12 million in the Armed Forces
leave only 17 million to do the work,
and, when you subtract from this the 15,
765,000 who are in state and
city
offices and 520,000 in hospitals, mental
institutions and similar places,
the
work force is reduced to 715,000.
Fine, but, 462,000 are
vagrants,
leaving only 253,000 to do the work.
There are 252,998 people in jail,
leaving--you guessed it--- just
two
people, you and me, to do the work. And
I'm getting tired.
Passed on by Ike Clair

All employees were saddened by the
news of the death of the son of Alex
Lopez on April 15th.
Our sympathy and condolences to the
entire Lopez Family.

This is the date chosen for the much
talked about friendly "Battle of the

City Manager, Jim Castrodale, will do
the honors and throw out the first ball
at 2:30 P.M.
at York Jr. High School,
9100 York Street.
This First

Game will be umpired by Bill Knobeloch
and Sherry Meier.
Word has it that Ruth Mccullah is
heading up a special cheering section
(complete with porn-porns?).
This wi 11 be the opening game for
both teams after a sparsely scheduled
practice season due to Mother Nature's
rampages but both teams are ready and
willing to take to the field.

BOWLING IDEA SCORES A STRIKE
The response to last month's inquiry
on a possible Bowling Team, brought a
flood of response. Due to vacations and
other summer activities, it is felt that
we should wait until fall before committing ourselves to any league play.
There are several persons who would
like to bowl just for the fun of it beforehand and if you would like to join
them, sign up with Cel, at Ext. 54.

ENTHUSIASM PLUS
Despite the blizzard conditions of
April 7th, several girls were present at
an organizational meeting of the Girls
Softba 11 Team, at which Team Captains
Linda Wollert and Kathy Martinez- were
elected, as well as Cecilia Schenfeld
as Team Secretary.
Plans were also discussed regarding
tentatively scheduled games,
including
one with local radio station personalities. There will be further announcements on this later and we hope everyone will support the efforts of this enthusiastic team.

UM PIRE'S POINT OF VI EW

UMPIRE'S POINT OF VIEW

I feel that an un-biased viewpoint is
in order regarding the Mens-Womens Softball Game.
As the feminine half of the
roster of umpires, I assure you that the
final score will reflect th8 talent and
athletic ability of both teams and all
decisions made by myself and my esteemed
colleague will be fair and without prejudice.
In closing, I would like to remind
everyone that Chanel #5 is less expensive than brandy.
Sherry Meier

As an official umpire of the Men'sWomen's Softball Game, I felt it my obligation to scout the teams.
Contrary to popular opinion,
the
girls know which end of the bat to hit
with, had their gloves facing the right
direction and ran the bases in the correct order.
Hits were mostly
Texas
league singles, throwing arms were surprisingly accurate, team work and team
spirit very good.
As per the rules of this game, the
men come into it unpracticed.
(Although
I did see some cheating one noon hour in
back of the treatment plant.)
The team
brings into the game a not too spectacular record from last year but plenty of
spirit (team?).
I anticipate many sore arms and legs,
overthrows and strikes.
I also predict
a final score of Women 5 - Men 8.
Remember that umpires are
above
bribery, but for thou who still wish to
try, brandy is my favorite.

Few foods have more nutritional value
than does the peanut and it is consumed
in many forms in our daily diet. Peanuts
roasted or in the shell,
peanut oil,
peanut flour and the great all-American
standby--- peanut butter.
It is amazing how many ways peanut
butter turns up in things we eat;
in
candy, cookies, cake, icing and on sandwiches.
In conducting an informal survey on
how people used and liked peanut butter
we came up with the following do . it your,
self favorites.
Peanut butter on:
warm toast, fresh
bread and on crackers.
Combined on sandwiches with: hamburgers, hot dogs, mayonnaise,
j~lly,
fried bananas, honey, broiled tomatoei,
fried bacon, bologna.
It seems that peanut butter brings
out an adventuresome nature in people.
They will try it combined with most anything and like it. For the unconverted,
try it, you might like it. For all,---conduct your own survey, you won't believe the answers you get'.

Sounds easy?
Well it just sounds
that way. The El Jebel Shrine Temple on
May 5th will barnstorm the area around
Denver with its parade units promoting
the 32nd Annual El Jebel Circus to be
held June 8th through June 9th.
The group will leave Denver at 7:45
A.M.
going to Boulder where the 1st
parade starts at 9:00 A.M. Coffee and
donuts after the parade and then on to
Longmont for Parade No. 2 and then on to
Greeley for Parade No. 3.
Lunch in Ft.
Collins and Parade No. 4. Par adg, NQ .• ,,5
in Fort Morgan and on to Sterlini for
dinner and Parade No. 6.
The group expects to be homeward
bound about 10 P.M.,
tired and worn out
but having had a rewarding day.
If you
happen to be in any of these cities
plan to take in the parade, it's great?:

A NEW FEATURE

Beginning with this issue, a regular feature of our newsletter will be a brief
biographical sketch of management personnel with the City.
The purpose of this
sketch is to enable all employees to get to know the "boss" better.
This month's
subject is our newly named Assistant City Manager, Bob Wilson. As you all know, Bob
has been with the City a little over a year now and was originally hired as Director
of Personnel and Finance.
Originally born in Hollywood, California, Bob spent a good P?rt of his high
school years in both the Los Angeles and Atlanta, Georgia areas. After graduating
from UCLA in January, 1961, with a degree in Public Administration, he immediately
started on a management Training Program, however, the Berlin Wall was built and he
found himself, a couple of months later, with the U. S. Army in Heidelberg, Germany.
After discharge from the Army in June of 1963, Bob went to work as a Securities Analyst for a large West Coast stockbroker. While there, he met his wife, Linda, and
after a whirlwind courtship, they eloped to Las Vegas and were married in March of
1964. Later that year, he joined the Management Training Program of Proctor
and
Gamble and spent eighteen months working with that firm until he moved on to greener
pastures with Honeywell, Inc. in S2ptember of 1968.
Starting as Assistant Manager in the Los Angeles branch of Honeywell, Bob moved
on as manager of his own office, eighteen months later in San Diego.
After setting
up housekeeping in their first home in the San Diego area and just getting settled,
Bob was transferred again, after only five months in San Diego, to the Denver branch
of Honeywell where he also assumed responsibilities for the New Mexico, Montana, and
parts of Texas areas.
After three years of rather extensive travel throughout the Rocky Mountains Bob
decided to look for something that would allow him to put down roots in one spot.
He started looking in the field of his original study, Public Administration, and
the rest is history.
Bob, his wife Linda, and daughter, Amanda, have recently moved to the Woodglen
area in Thornton and have put down what they hope to be permanent roots.

Your editor is waiting for that day

that everyone should have an unscheduled

Starting next month the biographical

Not fair to ask

REMEMBER WHEN?
The need for space in which to preform their jobs has been an employee and
department problem since the City was
incorporated in 1956.
It is facinating to listen to stories
of the ingenuity used in coping with the
need for space and still staying within
the well known budget.
We ran a short history of the Fire
Department in September of 1972 which
told of the struggles this department
hQd until their present quarters were
built in City Hall.
Work has been started on a 2nd Fire
Station at 92nd and Huron Street which
will be ready by May 1st.
The new modular building in back of
City Hall is a temporary answer to the
crowded conditions of several departments.
The investigative staff of the
Police Department occupies half of the
building with the Planning and Recreation Departments occupying the other half.
No comment on the quarters they had before the modular was erected.
A feature of the modular building is
that it could be moved from its present
location to elsewhere in the City and
adapt to almost any use in the future.
Another department with a history for
coping is the Maintenance Department of
the Utility System.
Devere King agreed to write a history
on the quarters of this department for
this month's issue of the p3per but it
does not include any of the many interesting sidelights which occurred. You
will find no mention of high water, or
rodents or skunks. The detailed history

WATER MAINTENANCE SHOP
BY DEVERE KING
1966- Office located in the Clearwell.
Undersized for maintenance, with
no shop or inventory space.
1967- Moved to present location, old
sewer plant. We had to completely
renovate the interior of the building, removing pipes, pumps, hot
water heaters.
We repaired the
floor and ceiling as well as we
could, built an office, employee
lunchroom and installed the heating. After completion of our present location and bringing in the
required inventory and machinery
for proper utility maintenance, we
were agaj_n buldging at the seams.
1968- We realized that we had already
out grown ourselves and directed
our thoughts to a maintenance and
meter shop combination and preliminary plans were drawn up. Then
the idea was presented that since
the City Shop was also overcrowded why not combine all shops into
one large complex, with a paved
area throughout.
1973- Should be the year for the new
complex.
We have all experienced our
share
of shortage of space. At the time it is
happening it is a consent source of
grip~s, daily complaints and a first
class pain in the neck.
Given time it
becomes one of the lines of a department's history.

Water demand is beginning to increase
as the weather warms.
The Western Hills

plant will be in operation within the
next two weeks.

SUCCESS PLUS
The recent bicycle auction was quite
successful.
Despite a stormy day, many
people were on hand to bid on bicycles
and miscellaneous items.
Acutioneer,
Officer Bill Clanton, did an excellent
job. Both Ordinance Officers, Tom Gomer
and Steve Schutz also did excellent jobs
both in preparation, and working at the
auction.

COUNCIL HAPPENINGS
Last month we met our councilmen and
counselors.
Now let us meet the vivacious personality that is busy recording
all the action.
She is Penny Conlin our
City Clerk, an intelligent, witty individual with an infectious laugh.
Her
presence at council is a treat for all.
Penny keeps busy during the meeting testifying in City matters and trying to
keep up with amendments amending
the
amendment to the original motion.
You
should see the expression on her face
when she is asked to read it back.
Ask
Penny what she'd say if no one was at
Council to give the invocation and she
was called on - Amen, Penny - Amen.
The last 3 months have been busy ones
at council with the approval of several
apartment and townhouse developments,
and single family subdivision and zoning
changes.
Appropriations were made for
street lights, stop lights and for improvements in most departments. Appointments were made to the Planning Commission and new positions were authorized.
The City Awards program was put into
effect and also training programs for
the City Staff.
Public hearings were

held for liquor license applications and
other licenses were renewed. Maintenance agreements were authorized
and
maintenance equipment purchased.
A special feather in council's capwas
the re-negotiation of water bonds. Several Utility Policy Contracts were approved as were funds for new water tanks
treatment plant expansion and additions
to the Croke Lake Pump Station.
One meeting will find the agenda finished at 8:10 with Mr. Castrodale standing on a chair setting the clock to 8:15
so public hearings can start. By the way
that clock is still 5 minutes fast! The
next meeting finds everyone yawning
at
1:00 A.M. while ordinances are being
read in their entirety.
Both of these
are extremes with most of the monthly
meetings adjourning by 10:30-11:30 P.M.
There is a lot happening at council
and the invitation is extended to you to
attend council meeting and
observe.
Roberts rules of order are in force and
the meetings run smoothly, humor is injected making it a pleasant, interesting
and informative meeting.
Next month we will take a closer look
at resolutions, ordinances and zoning
matters.

THE DELUXE COW

TAKE TIME

Have you ever noticed the price tags
on left rear windows of new cars?
The
base price is quoted, then follows a
long list of extra charges for things
you would think were quite essential to
normal operation of the car.
A farmer near Decorah, Iowa, read one
of those price tags then inserted an ad
of his own in the local paper.
It read
as follows:
FOR SALE
One Holstein milk cow
$100.00
Accessories:
Udder
75.00
Two-tone color (Black & White)
50.00
Four split hooves@ $10.00 ea.
40.00
Tail, approximately 3-1/2 ft.
5.00
Extra stomach
35.00
Dual horns@ $15.00 ea.
30.00
Total price
Passed along by:

$335.00
