BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH - TERRY COLE

Adndni.strative Assistant to the City Manager, is another transwho has eventually found his way to our City.
Born in Alameda, California, in 1945, Terry graduated from high school in the
Oakland area in 1962.
While in high school, Terry swam cornpetitively for both his
school and local swim clubs, piling up a number of national records in 1962 <mi!
1963 in his class. He was good enough, in fact, to obtain a swimming srh0lnrship to
Denver University, which he attended until his graduation in 1966 with a degree in
Political Science.
Upon graduation from Denver University, Terry enlisted in the Army and
eventually was assigned to the Intelligence Branch as a Photo Interpreter. Prior to
being shipped to Vietnam for ten months of service, he married his high school
sweetheart, Trish, in September of 1967.
After serving his time in Vietnam, Terry
returned to Colorado and completed his tour of duty at Fort Carson.
Upon his release from active duty, he resumed his education at Denver University in September of 1969, and obtained his Master's Degree in Public Administration
in March of 1971.
Prior to coming to the City in July of 1971, Terry worked as an
A~minisLrntive Intern at the Celebrity Sports Center.
An avid sports fan, Terry is
always the first to volunteer for whatever recreational activity the City engages
in.
If he is not playing basketball, swimming, on the tennis courts, or the softball field, you will likely find him backpacking, skiing, sailing, or camping.
Terry and Trish own a home in Arvada, and are expecting their first baby "boy"
in late July.

43 TO 13 "WIN" RULED A TIE
A -,~~ge, enthusiastic crowd roared its approval, as Tern Nolte opened the First Annual
Men's-Women's Softball Game on May 5th, with a first pitch pop fly to Karn Sunday at
second base. But from that moment on, the men had things their own way, though visibly concerned over the potential power of the Wom~n's team.

This was evidenced by the numerous errors by the men (one play alone accounted for 6
errors) while the girls kept chewing away at their lead. Then, with two out and two
women on base, in the last inning of the scheduled seven inning contest, the OFFICIAL
SCOREKEEPER, Max Nicholls, announced that the score was tied. The men turned white;
the women screamed with delight; spectators cheered and the teams' dual manager, Bob
Donaldson, nearly fainted. The third and final out was made by Bob Martin, who held
onto the ball like his life depended on it.
-Not to be satisfied with a "tie,n the two teams chose "mixed sides" and continued to
play until the rain clouds forced an ending. No one really knows what the final score
was, for after the seventh inning, no one kept score. However, rumor has i.t the men
were leading 43 to 13.
Our thanks must go to Mayor Tom Carrillo for providing liquid refreshment to all; to
Don Krugmire and an anonymous donor, for providing "bases" (when ours were stolen the
night before the game) and to all those who supported us with their attendance, which
all made this event successful. We were all disappointed that City Manager,
James
Castrodale's, minor injury prevented his appearance at the opening ceremony, but we
look forward to having him with us during the coming season. Our thanks too, to Mr.
J.M. Crowfoot, Principal at York Junior High School, for granting pernission to use
the facilities at York Junior High School, Parks and Recreation Director, Ralph Bender, for his assistance and to Chief Matlock for lending the loudspeaker.

SOFTBALL GAME HIGHLIGHTS
Base umpire, Bill· Knobeloch's, call
against Jerry Groothuis' "illegal" slide
into second bnse,
was a work of art;
"You are out---SIR!11
Jim Ma r t i nez declined to pitch
for
the men when he leaned his wife,
Kathy
Aartinez, was the opposing pitcher.
Penny Conlin could easily have set a
new outdoor track record, chasing down
fly balls in center field.
Terry Cole looked as if he was trying
to put a softball in earth orbit with his
unique 11up swing" batting.
Fred Davidson nearly ran over
Mitch
Cordover (who was running the bases a.ie ad of him).
We' re not sure if Fred is
that fast a runner or if Mitch lost his
steam between second and third.
Wayne Volkman and Roger Whaling were
C?nsidering taking shifts sleeping
in
the outfield, until Ann Weber dropped a
"Texas leaguer" between them.
Right Field Umpire, Sherry Meier made
her one and only call by telling
Terry
Cole he was out for leading off base(not

allowed) and the rest of the game waiting
for right field hits, which never came.
Cel Sc~enfeld was so busy at · . first
base in the first two innings, she. wished t~ere were traffic lights
installed,
to keep from getting run over.
Chuck Alver nearly screwed himself into the ground swinging at an outside ball.
Lucille Miller played an outstand~ng
game, nearly missing a double-play in the
sixth inning.
Linda Wollert didn't give an inch
at
home plate to the runners charging
in
from third base. It must have been that
determined look that made the raen
think
twice about challenging her on a
close
play in the fourth inning.
game
Starla Clark played the entire
bare-footed.
Judy Nye and Mary Kay HDyden both came
close to making spectacular running catches while looking into a bright sun.
The women's fielding star was·. Lynell
Winsett who saved many runs from scoring
with her difficult catches.

THE PEANUT BUTTER SURVEY CONTINUES

NEW FIRE STATION

Reaction to last month's peanut butter survey was different than we had expected.
Comments were usually to the
effect that some combinations sounded
horrible but had I ever tried----!!!
Add the following ways to eat peanut
butter to last month's list.
Peanut butter on apples or celery
Peanut butter on sandwiches with;
sandwich spread and onions
dill pickles and onions
lettuce and mayonnaise
Peanut butter on sliced bananas, with
nuts on too £or dessert
Peanut butter soup
This just about wraps up the peanut
l,q U::er survey
except for the notation
that Bob Donaldson uses peanut butter
to play 'Goose the Moose'.

details.

The Fire Department hopes to move in
to the new fire station at 92nd & Huron

thereafter.
It is really a . nice looking station
and should be an asset to the City in
location for quicker response on fire
and ambulance calls.
Personnel of the Dept. are already
doing some of the preliminary work necessary before moving over.
One pumper
one ambulance and one ·weed truck are
tentatively planned to be headquartered
at the new station.
Watch for further
word of completion and come see our new
station.
With the additional seven new firemen
for our new station, we again feel we
lucked out in getting men talented in
other fields besides fire fighting. Don
Oliver is quite an artist and you'll be
seeing some of his work in our local
business establishments when we conduct
a camp2ign to recruit Volunteer Firemen.
Don's posters are something else so
watch for them. We hope to utilize his
talents for this paper later.

Strangers
If you are following an out-of-state car in. city or suburban traffic, be extra

In any event,
give him plenty of room.

"ASCET'1 ELECTS OFFICERS
On Thursday, May 10th, the newly formed Rocky Mountain Chapter of the American
3ociety of Certified Engineering Technicians (ASSET), held their election of
officers, at which Utility Inspector Bob Donaldson was elected National Director of
the local chapter.
He will represent the chapter in all national and regional
functions as well as local director.
ASCET is comprised of persons who have acquired certification by the Institute
of Certified Engineering Technicians (ICET), in their respective fields, which includes among others; Civil, Chemical, and Industrial Engineering.
Students and
other individuals who are engaged in studies or various engineering professions are
also accepted for membership.
ICET was established by the National Society of Professional Engineers in 1961,
to evaluate the qualifications of persons engaged in engineering technician capacities. To date, approximately 45,000 persons nation wide have been certified.
Anyone interested in learning more about ASCET should take time to talk to Bob,
he is pretty enthusiastic about this organization and rightfully so.

calling to ask about the water. All day
and all night the phones were ringing.

FLOOD DUTY - ENGINEERING DEPT.
Bill Knobeloch and Bob Donaldson responded to the recent flood emergency
at mid-afternoon on Sunday, May
6th
and assisted in emergency operations
related to Thornton's Utility Systems
for several hours.
All major water and sewer mains,
in
endangered areas, were
repeatedly
checked, and a 2011 water main on-Washington Street was shut down when there
was a danger of it's breaking open after
being exposed in a washout.
Assistance was also provided to the
Street Department in locating street
failures.
Both Bill and Bob were
nearly
stranded on Frontage Road, along I-80,
between 72nd Avenue and 88th Averiue ,
while checking Well Fields, when bridges
along these routes became
impassable,
requiring a return to the City liraits
via I-25 .

FIRST FLIGHT
When was the last time you heard about an 81 year
old grandmother n:aking
her first airplane trip?
Don Krugmire's mother, Edith, made
her first flight this past Tuesday, flying from her home in Tacoma, Washington
to Denver for a visit.
Mrs. Krugmire, we hope the trip was a
memorable experience and that you have a
beautiful visit here in Denver.

ALONG OUR STREETS
The Street Department has been pretty bcsy this past winter.
We set a record
of the most sand and salt ever used by the City in one winter.
Even with more eLlployees, several of the storms were impossible to keep up
,d th. During one of the La s t snow storms, we ran into trouble.
Usually, we try to
keep the streets in as good a shape as possible under the bad conditions.
However,
~his one storm caught us by surprise.
After sanding all night, we ran out of sand!
So, during the morning rush hours, it w~s a little slick, and, believe n~, we heard
about it from employees and the public in general.
I don't think there is one person around who hasn't seen, or felt, the condition of our City streets.
We Street Department employees know how you feel because
Qe have to drive on them too.
Bad weather, and not being able to patch properly,
.:::r,~ two c aus es of the large chu ck-ho Les , bumps, humps, etc.
In the winter, when
the weat-her is cold, we cannot use the sc:me asphalt as we do in the summer.
When
th<? ~.-,e,:ither is bad, we use tzhat;
is called "cold mix."
In the summex we use "hot
.n i.x
The difference is that if we used "ho t mix" in the winter, it wou Ld be as
hard zs a rock before we co~ld go from the plant back to the City.
Cold mix is
made so that it doesn't get hard in the truck.
Unfortunately, it doesn't get hard
whe:n we patch the holes, either!
Water also washes it out of the holes.
However,
we have to put something in them, right?
Loe.king at the brighter side, if the
weather stays nice, as it has been lately, we will be able to put permanent patches
in some of these holes, etc., in the streets th2t everyone's been cussing for the
past several months. Please bear with us.
I th.ink everybody know::., especially us,
that we have a big job in front of us.
The Street Department has put a lot of hours in on the recent flood .. This
:neant blocking the streets, cleaning storm drains, and trying to get streets open
that were closed by the flood.
All I can say is th~t I hope it will be a long,
lo~g time before we get another on~, aud I think everybody agrees!!!
