EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH FOR MARCH
At last Monday night's Council session, Evelyn Utterback was presented a plaque
and Savings Bond as the City's Employee of the Month for March.
Evelyn was nominated by Terry Cole. Terry's winning nomination, which was read
before Council, pointed out that every department within the City has appreciably
benefitted from having Evelyn "aboard" for more than eight years. She has been an
invaluable aid and an inexhaustible source of information to all employees.
Over
the years, Evelyn has readily accepted many additional duties not related to her
assigned tasks, including work in the City Manager's Office, Personnel Department,
Fire Department, Police Department and Building Department.
Please join the City and City Council in expressing a very meaningful thank you
to Evelyn for such outstanding day to day service.

NICE TO HAVE YOU WITH US

THEY DID IT AGAIN

The following employees will be certified July 1st upon
completing
six
months:
Mike Silva - Police Dept.
Bob Donaldson - Engineering
John Purkey - Building Dept.
Arthur Vermilye - Police Dept.

Wednesday, the 13th of June, was designated as "Moving Day11 within several
City Hall offices. Four City Departments
were involved in the moving process, a
task that required 4 hours to complete.
The most extensive move resulted in
transferring the Building Dept. into the
modular unit located behind City Hall.
To provide the necessary space for the
Building Dept., the Planning Dept. was
moved from the modular unit into the
office space previously occupied by the
Building Dept.
The Director of Parks
and Recreation was moved into the office
space occupied by the City Clerk.
However, to accomodate the secretary for
Parks and Recreation and Planning; it
necessitated the moving of Don Rohrbaugh
of Data Processing into the Planning
office.
Overall, a total of 12 staff members
from the various departments were involved in the move.
Other than some
minor moments of confusion and a few
sore backs, "Moving Day" was carried out
quite successfully.

ENGARDE
I was surprised to find that many
employees were not aware of the fact
that the City is offering
fencing
. (French foil) as an 8 week recreation
course.
It promises to be exciting and
fun.
Unfortunately, the
equipment
ordered for this course has not been
received and the original starting date
of June 21st has been postponed. There
are still openings in the class and the
action will begin at 7:30 p.m. on the
first Thursday after the foils and masks
are received. Contact Jere in Parks and
Recreation for sign-up.

NEW FEDERAL SIGN CODE

.~· <e>

(SCHOOL

CROSSJNO)

There is a great deal of sign work to be done to meet the
new Federal Sign Code and in order to do this we have had to get
some new material at a cost of about $6,000.
I think most people
have
seen
the
new
signs
on
the
highways
and
in other cities.
~
r---,
Most of the new signs are symbols instead of words. For in
KEEP
RIGHT
stance,
the old signal ahead sign had the words "Signal Ahead"
on them but the new sign is simply a picture of a traffic signal
The main reason for these new signs
is that you don't have to
read
them.
When
you
have
to
read
a
sign
you have to take your
~
eyes
off
of
the
road
for
a
longer
time
than
if you just have to
NO RIGHT
TURN
glance at a symbol.
These signs also bridge a language problem
and similar signs have been in use for some time in other parts
of the world a~d found to be very successful.
At first people might have trouble understanding the new
~
signs but it won't take long to learn them.
There will be a
supplemental
sign
under
the
symbol
to
tell
you
what it means
~
for a while, which will be removed later.
Also another small change but a big job is the changing of
the street name s i gns, As you probably know the street signs in
~
_the City of Thornton have a blue back-ground with white letters.
The new code requires a green back-ground with white letters.
~
It sounds like a lot of trouble and money to change all
signs, but it has a good purpose. It will make all the signs in
the United States uniform and possibly this summer or next when
/you vacation from state to state, the signs you see will be just
like the ones here at home where you live.

· NEWS FROM THE WATER & SEWER MAINT. DEPT.
We would like to say ''Welcome" to our
two fine part-time helpers for this summer, John Goforth and Mike Westover.
They are doing a good job down in those
muddy leak holes, as all the men over
the past two weeks have done, we have
a break every day.
Our vacations are in full swing now
with Devere King family hiking,
fishing
and sleeping in our snowy Rocky Mountains.
Doug Scheffel and family are, I hope,
enjoying the sunny skies of California
and avoiding high gas prices.
The George Keil family had a nice vacation, they went visiting and worked on
their ranch.
Ike and Mary Belle Clair· are getting
their trailer ready to leave the 29th of
June for that good fishing land in Wyoming.

Don DeRenzo & family are also heading
for Wyoming (I think) that is if his new
truck that he has had on order for over
three mont.hs is delivered. The railroad
lost it for a month or so but he received word that they had found it. His
reaction was: Hurry, hurry!! The family
hopes to leave the 29th with the Clairs.
Shorty Spears and family are heading
for the Blue Grass Country of Kentucky
and Tennessee on July 12th to visit relatives and friends. Have a good time!!
Jack Armentrout is feeling almost his
self again.
He had open heart surgery
June 7th to replace some· arteries and he
can hardly wait to get back to work. He
is crazy. Why would anyone want to get
right back to work?
Jack, take it easy
and relax, everyone said, 'Hello, Jack,'
and Jack said to tell everyone, 'Hi.'

It all goes back to the training our

ALONG OUR STREETS
A lot of time has been spent working
on the ball field at City Park and we
will be glad to see it completed.
When
finished it will be a great addition to
our growing city.
Other important items on the summer
Street Department agenda are the striping of streets which is very much needed, painting of cross walks,
street
sweeping, street overlay, building of
parks, blading of some streets and of
some shoulders.
I
It s going to be a long busy sunnner ..

HOW ABOUT THAT!

!

With only one week of training and
three of the men never having been on a
Fire Dept. competitive hose laying team,
Thornton managed to place fourth in two
events June 3rd at Arvada, Colorado.
This speaks well of our men and we
feel they should do well at the State
Convention being held at Snow Mass also
in June.
It's been a long time since we won
any trophys and it is going to feel good
to put some new ones in the Trophy Case
and even better when they bring back the
big one "State Champs." Maybe next year.

President Nixon and Premier Brezhnev

Utility Board members and City Councilmen. Champagne toasts were made last
Thursday evening at the dedication of
the new addition to the Thornton Water

(Mr. Vigil was the only one who
spilled any of his champagne.)
Three lovely hostesses, Mrs. James
Castrodale, Mrs. Charles Rickey and Mrs.
Bob Gorsline were on hand to greet the
touring board members and councilmen and
to serve champagne punch and cookies.
Doris Rohret and Cecilia Schenfeld
were invited to don bikinis and try out

CIRCUS FUN
On Tuesday, June 12th, the City Parks

matinee trip to the Shrine Circus.
64
children, ages 6 to 12 took a bus from
City Hall to the Circus leaving at 1:30

Chaperons were
the bus driver, Walt Kosciw and Jere

The mind of a child is a beautiful place
An Eden where many things grow,
A garden of beauty where, sheltered by
love,
Grow flowers in row upon row.
The mind of a child is a wonderful place
Where wishes and dreams are so real,
Where kittens and puppies and gingerbread men
Can talk and can actually feel.
The mind of a child is a mystical place
Where character grows like a tree,
And children become either better or
worse
By actions of you, or of me.

Akron, Ohio, and from there they plan to
make a swing around the east coast and
back to Colorado. We hope they all have
a wonderful trip and Jerry comes back
relaxed and rested.
Bob and Betty Gorsline are attending

Sounds like fun!!!

REFLECTIONS FROM THE UTILITY OFFICE

RIDDLE

Numerous City employees enjoyed the
Shrine Circus, getting the
tickets
through Walter Kosciw, and our thanks to
him for allowing us to have such a good
time at reduced rates.
Flag Day was really observed in City
Hall this year as it was Beverly Lane's
birthday and she passed out small flags
and then we all had cherry pie and ice
cream instead of the usual cake to help
celebrate her birthday.
Jack Armentrout is home and recovering from heart surgery.
We're all hoping to see him around soon.
Terry Jerman is back on the job after
a short stint in the hospital for minor
surgery.
We surely welcome Bill Adams, the ·new
custodian. Let's all help him by cleaning up our own messes where we can.
June 11th was "Moving Day" in City
Hall with people being moved out, in and
to and from. Needless to say the switch
board had quite a time keeping up with
where to reach which person; ask me, I
was helping that morning.
Wishing everyone a Happy 4th of July
but drive carefully.
Grace Lindner

The clerk tells three men who want to
check into a hotel together that the
bill will be $30.00 so they split it and
pay $10.00 each. The manager later asks
the clerk to refund $5 becaus& the true
bill is $25.00.
The clerk, finding it
impossible to split this up evenly among
3 men, decides to keep $2 and give each
man back a dollar.
This means that each man paid $9 or a
total of $27.00 ($9 x 3) for the room.
They paid $27 and the clerk kept $2.00
for a total of $29.00 ($27 + $2). Where
did the other dollar go?
Read next month's paper or call Bill
Knobeloch in Engineering for the answer.

he might show up on the tennis court

A victory over the Jefferson County

result of a 38-14 loss by the Thornton
Men's Softball Team to Patrolman Jim

Team the previous week.
Following this game, by mutual agreement
the two teams merged and will, beginning
July 12th, represent the Thornton Employees in the newly formed Slow-Pitch

The game with Arvada was a see-saw
battle which was decided in the last of

both teams, trying so hard to win, would

SPORTS FEATURE
TWO PLUS TWO EQUALS SIX
For the past two years Bob and Doris
Donaldson have been active in a Golden
Colorado Bowling League
and
recently
brought home two trophys which they now
proudly display along next to the four
they won last season.
Besides being part of a winning team
for two years,
they have both received
individual "Most Improved Bowler" awards
as well as cash prizes
for individual
scores.
Both Bob and his wife are looking
forward to the Thornton Employees Mixed
League season which is planned for this
fall.

*****************************-Jri,:*********

Beginning this month, a Thornton Employee will be selected and recognized
by your Sports writer, Bob Donaldson for
their individual sports effort.
ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
No matter what the season, you will
find Penny Conlin right in there giving
her all to what ever game is appropriately in season.
Please note that she
is one of the few participants of recent
basketball and softball games to remain
unbruised and whether in swim suit or
ball cap, no one can argue she is an all
round choice for Athlete of the Month.

BITS AND PIECES

Have you tried to get your change
back from the pop machine in the employees' lounge in a hurry?
Relax,
it
takes time, about five minutes.
Take time and walk up the hill and
see Bob Gorsline's roses. Th?y're beautiful and he has been sharing them with
Gel and Doris.
Jim Wellman tells us that as of June
26th his department had used 3,990 TONS
of overlay on city streets. Larry added
the conrrnent that 300 gallons of white
paint and 600 gallons of yellow paint
has been used so far for striping and
for making a whole bunch of little dots.
Do you ever feel that some things are
too wild to be true?
I have proof that
Sherry Meier cooks dirt,
freezes shoes
and bakes records and tupperware.
Vic May will be on vacation the week
of July 2nd from the meter shop and we
understand that he might take a fishing
trip up to the Flaming Gorge area.
Get
a good rest Vic, because we have a busy
summer in front of us.
If you haven't been to the
Police
Dept. in a while it's worth your time to
stop in and see all the changes that are
being made.
You wouldn't recognize the
old place.
Had you noticed that Smitty shaved
off his mustache?
A long time ago-----extension 51 in
City Hall was assigned to the 'Reproduction Room' and is now assigned to Ron
Rote1lo. Any conrrnent on this Ron?

Genny Shake took a two weeks vacation
recently and traveled to Iowa to visit
her son and family.
She reports it was
a great vacation.
Mary Beth George, meter reader, was
asked to explain the notation CB L she
made on a meter book.
She gave this explanation to the office.
It meant-----Come Back Later.
Two butterflies were
mating on the meter lid and she didn't
want to bother them. Very simple.
Mary Kay Hayden informs us that the
people living in the apartment above her
have a baby boa as a pet and she is a
little concerned about it getting loose
and crawling around the building.
Jim Carpenter's resignation from City
Council came as a real surprise to almost everyone.
If you know him or have
ever met him, you have an opinion about
him because he isn't a neutral person.
We have been lucky to have had someone
with his ability lending a hand these
many years.
Jim, we hope to still see
you around City Hall now and then.
A brighter note on the Carpenter's is
that Jim Carpenter, Junicr, Universityof
Colorado student will be going with the
C. U. Basketball Team on a 3 weeks tour
of Brazil in August.
Sounds great.
Evelyn, congratulations on
being
named Employee of the Month for
March.
We're all very proud of you and know how
much you help us in our day to day work.
As of now there have been 2 men and 2
women receive Employee of the Month awards. Just a passing comment.
Have a good 4th of July.

All employees are encouraged to stop

model of the new Recreation Center and
the new Treatment Plant Facility.
There are fact sheets available at
the exhibit explaining the details of
these new additions to the City and it
is worth your time to stop and see them.
The models will b~ in City Hall until
about July 12th.
