MAKE OUTING BIG SUCCESS

Sunny skies r~turned to Thornton on September 9th,
just in time for nearly 180
adults and 75 children who attended the Employee-Family Picnic at Thornton City
Park.
The cool, early afternoon temperatures prevented any swinnning and steady
breezes kept anyone from playing Badminton but many participated in other activities
that were available,
including Volleyball, Tennis, Tug-of-War and Softball.
There
was no shortage of food either, as there was an ample supply of salads, casseroles,
fried chicken, relish dishes and desserts to suit everyones taste.
Off duty firemen
were kept busy dispensing liquid refreshment to both the young and old.
An added feature of the day, for both the young and young-at-heart,
the rides given by the Fire Department on one of the Department's trucks.

were

Another highlight of the day's activities was the awarding of over $100 in door
prizes to lucky employees who were present and Service Awards to a number of
employees.
Many departments and individual employees were responsible for the
success
of the picnic "(which we hope will become an annual event) and though the list is too
numerous to name everyone, we sincerely thank all who participated.
Bob Donaldson
Picnic Chairman

MORE EXCUSES
One of these days things are going to
slow down and there will once again be
time to do the paper properly.
I had
some nice but lengthy articles
turned
in for the paper this month and do
not
have time to process them for the paper.
Linda Wollert submitted a cute story,
Cy gave me a timely story on checking
your home to prepare it for winter.
I'm
still holding a story that Dee turned in
last month and Wayne Volkman promises he
will write a story for sure 'next' month
My thanks to all of you for being so
patient.

SEASON'S END
It's with

mixed

emotions

that

BOWLING BLUES
A disappointing turnout to form an
.Employee Bowling League,
coupled with
news that there were no alleys available
until 1974 for league play, might have
made some people think there would be no
bowling this year .
However------we do intend to go ahead
with some of our plans so that we can
enter a league team next season.
Many
did not come to the last meeting as they
were on vacation or were working and
since we do have almost 20 people wanting to ~owl, we will plan some
bowling
dates, to begin Friday, Oct. 5th at 6:30
P.M. Watch your department
bulletin
board for further details.

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
This month's award goes to Don Krugmire.
Though Don was unable to play
Softball this season, he did provide
some much needed equipment, that made it
possible to have a team play.
· Don has always been active in sports
and while serving in the armed forces in
Japan, was very active in the Little
League program.
Our thanks to Don for
his help and our congradulaticns at being selected Athlete of the Mouth.

· to an end.
It was a good. season overall (9 wins - 1 loss) though we do hope
that next year more players will attend;
both men and women.
There was no one star, as everyone
who played did so to the best of their
ability and each win was as a team.
There were many who assisted in a capacity other than playing and to all, my
sincere thanks for making this season a
success.

PICNIC BITS AND PIECES
Don Krugmire (Computer Dept.)
saved
the day, when he returned to City Hall
during the picnic,
to run off the 'employee listings' used in the door prize
drawing.
We were happy to have visiting with
us at the picnic, both the parents of
Bob Donaldson, Mr. & Mrs. John Donaldson
of Mass., and Beverly Lane, Mr. & Mrs.
Charles Coon of Tampa, Fla.
Sherry Meier was in such a hurry to
participate in the Tug-of-War,
that she
tripped over a rope on a lawn canopy and
then got stepped on during the competition.
Vic M2.y, one of the Softball game
'managers,'
forgot to include his own
name in the line-up for his team, until
after 4 innings had been played.
Jeff, son of Jerry Groothuis, was selected to draw the names for the door
prizes.
Unfortunately, Jeff was unable
to participate in any sports that day,
due to an injury received playing football.
The hottest foursome on the tennis
courts were Bob Wilson, Wayne Volkman,
John Bliss and his wife, Kathy. Warming
up for Bobby Riggs?
Special thanks to Chuck Alver,
for
his help in cleaning up the area after
everyone else left (and in a downpour at
that).

TREATMENT PLANT NEWS

BITS & PIECES FROM THE POLICE DEPT.

Jerry Bender and wife are now on va. cation touring the state of Wyoming.
Ron Ewig will be starting his vacation the 25th of Sept.
Ron says he will
work around the house and find time to
do a little fishing.
We are pleased to announce that Ray
Zink is back home after a two week stay
in the hospital.
Ray will be resting
and getting his strength back befor~ returning to work.
Ernest Hafner will fly back to Minneapolis the latter part of this month to
attend the wedding of his son, Thomas.
Ernie has four daughters and three sons.
All will be married now except for one
daughter and one son.
Max Nicholls

Well, the picnic was one smashing
success! Needless to say, anyone who did
not attend missed a real "smashing" good
time.
Speaking of picnics, does
anyone
know the whereabouts of a tupperware
bowl and lid-----large, white, last seen
with a small amount of potato salad in
it and the name Rankle on the bottom
with masking tape.
Once again, Thornton was the scene of
a tragic, fatal accident, when a woman
was killed at 96th and Colo. Blvd.
The
investigating Officer, Bruce Luedeman
did a fine job in a difficult situation.
How about the motorcycle patrolmen
currently gracing Thornton's streets?
Officers DeForest and Clanton are doing
a fine job.
There are many more officers doing
excellent work (all of them as a matter
of fact) every day but they modestly
keep feats of bravery hidden from the
newspaper reporter.

• SHARING IS BEAUTIFUL

Kann Sunday received the following
article from her mother-in-law in Maryland and passed it along to Dee Rankle
for the paper. Thanks, gals.
Most of us would never think that
television cormnercials had any religious
value, or that they could help us in our
thinking about God.
However, I have heard recently of a
school teacher who suggested to the
children in her class that they.take
some phrases from the commercials and
see if they could make them applicable
to God.
She was amazed at the results,
and I
have shared her amazement. Here is a new
version of the faith of a child.
God is like -Bayer Aspirin.
He
works wonders.
God is like
Ford. He's got a better idea.
God is like
Pan Am.
He makes the
going great.
God is like -- Dial Soap.
He gives
you 'round the clock protection.
God is like -- Coke.
He's the real
t-h.
- ·- ing.
God is like
Scope.
He makes you
fee 1 fresh.
God is liker -- G. E. Bulbs. He lights
our path.
And how is this for a climax:
God is like -- Hallmark Cards.
He
cared enough to send the very best.

Thornton Fire Dept.
Station #2 held
'Open House' on Saturday, Sept. 1st and
considering it was Labor Day week-end we
had a fair turn out to see the new fire
station. Approximately 80 people showed
for the opening and all persons seemed
well pleased with the entire station and
equipment.
Soda pop, doughnuts, and coffee were
served and everyone,
especially
the
young children enjoyed the special demonstrations by fire personnel.
Come
see us soon if you missed our open housa
Now it can be told 'or admitted. 1 Yes
Station #2 does have a love seat in the
T. V. recreation room and what's really
disconcerting about this love seat is
Little Richie and Bubbles generally have
it occupied so no one else has had a
chance to use it.

BITS

AND PIECES

Vic May wanted me to be sure to say
thanks to the Fire Dept.
for the rides
given the children on the fire trucks at
the Employee Picnic.
It was the high
light of the day for many of the kids.
Sherry Meier is now Court Clerk and
seems to be enjoying her duties.
Welcome to Camela Nation,
Merritt
Hutton High School student
who
works
afternoons for the City.
You can meet
her from 12:30 to 2:30 at the switchboard and from 2:30 to 5:00 at the Bldg.
Department.
The Northglenn Utility Office is moving to new quarters in the Northglenn
Mall about the first of October.
Jeff TerAvest was married Sept. 14th
and we wish the new couple the best of
luck and much happiness.
Lucille Miller and husband have purchased a new home which they hope will
be ready to move into sometime in Oct.
Elaine Stockton took some well earned ti~e off to vacation in Coal Creek
Canyon with relatives and planned a trip
to Durango for the train trip to Silverton.
Elaine, hope you had a wonderful
vacation.
Glad to hear that Ray Zink is out of
the hospital and at home.
Ray, take it
easy and remember that we all think of
you.
I have a feeling that when this summer is over, most employees will wonder
if it really happened.
I can't remember
a busier· or more hectic summe r ,
