The new telephone system has now been
installed.
I do think we have ironed
out the bulk of the bottlenecks
that
presented themselves and are now functioning smoothly.
I woul~ like to bring to your attention the night numbers which go into effec~ when the switchboard is not operating, (evening after 5:00 P.M., weekends,
holidays, etc.) The following numbers go
in effect after hours;

Men's Slowpitch teams are now being
organized and we would like very much to
have an employee team.
An organizational meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m.
at the Community Building, 2141 E. 95th
Avenue for all interested teams.
Teams being formed should call and
reserve a place on the roster as soon as
possible and you will be given all the
details as to entrance fees and player
fees.
Each team will play one game per
week.
The Park & Recreation's phone number
is 287-5501, Ext. 269.
We non-players
need an employee team to root for, so--come on fellows, sign up.

If you are stationed at one of these
numbers after hours, it is not
necessary to dial 9 to get an outside line.
Upon picking up the receiver, you will
be hooked into an outside line and need
only dial the -number you desire.
We are still in the process of making
some minor adjustments with the system
so continue to bear with us.
If I can help with any phone instructions you may need, you can reach me on
Ext. 214.

HE DID A BEAUTIFUL JOB

the time we were without an official Chief of Police, at the personnel meeting
on
March 30th. He did a great job and we all appreciated his leadership-very much.

I DID IT AGAIN
Last month's paper contained more errors and egg-on-face items than ususal and
once again I offer my apologies and no execuses.
Probably the most unforgivable error was to leave Cel Schenfeld's name off the
Directory List.
Celis one of the most important members of the City Chatter staff,
typing the final copy of the paper each month.
Utility No. 2 should have been listed as Cel Schenfeld, Secretary to Assistant
Utility Director.
Utility No. 3 (which was shown as Util. No. 2) is the Eng. staff
and the names were correct.
There_was more than one misspelled name.
Correct spelling is:
Tom Carrillo,
Duane Tinsley, Glenn Donharl, Penny Young and Ray Zink.
The correct address of Fire Station II is 770 West 92nd Avenue (765 W. 92nd Ave.
is Pony Storage, now under construction just east of Fire Station II).
The address
of the Meter Shop is 2291 E. 88th Ave.
I called Vic for the correct address and then
failed to enter it on the final copy.
Water storage tanks locaced east of the Western Hills Plant were shown as three
tanks with a total of 3,000,000 gallons capacity.
There are three tanks there with
a total capacity of 300,000 gallons which will be replaced by a 3,000,000
gallon

tank.
The Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of activities taught or su-

pervised by part-time employees, not just taught. Le s Ermold, new Parks and Recreation Director received his Bachelor degree in Physical Education, with a minor emphasis in Parks & Recreation, from Colorado State University and received a Masters degree in Recreation Administration from.the University of Northern Colorado in
1970.
Leaving out an entire sentence did make his education sound somewhat different.

As my memory serves me, I think I was doing a monthly report, my day to day job,
and trying to finalize the paper, worrying about the fact the Xerox was not working,
and therefore made more than the usual amount of errors. Agai~, my apologies to all.
B. Lane

DID YOU GET AN "ATTABOY AWARD"?
It reads:
CERTIFICATE
FOR YOUR VERY OUTSTANDING
PERFORMANCE
YOU ARE AWARDED:
"ONE ATTABOY"
One thousand "Attaboys" quaiifies you to
be a leader of men, work overtime with a
smile, explain assorted problems to management and be looked upon as a local
hero.
NOTE: ONE "AWSHIT" WIPES THE BOARD CLEAN
AND YOU HAVE TO START ALL OVER AGAIN

I think they are trying to tell me something because everytime I put out the
paper I ·would lose any "Attaboy" I had
earned.
Everytime I do not have enough
room for the word I need on one line and
cannot divide· it or come out one line
short in matching columns, it tends to
be my favorite expression. Sorry about
that.

THE BUILDING DEPARTMENT .
· I suppose the only way to really know
a department and how and why it functions is to work in it.
There are many
departments and many jobs in the City,
all with their own responsibilities.
The 7 months I have been working in
the Building Department have taught me a
great deal about the reason this department was established by the City Council
Chapter 16, Section 20 of the City of
Thornton Zoning Ordinance states;
A. ESTABLISHMENT.
There is
hereby
established the position of Building Inspector.
It shall be the
duty of the City Building Inspector to enforce these regulations
and the Building Code of the City
currently in effect.
One of the first things I learned was
that the Building Department constantly
refers to books, either the Zoning Ordinance Bo~k or the Uniform
Building
Code book or the Uniform Mechanical Gode
book or the National Electric Code book
or the Uniform Plumbing Code book. These
.are the rules that govern the department
and one of the standard statements you
hear in the Building Department is "It's
in the book."
I do admit that a-t times
the department becomes a little hectic
what with 5 fellows and 2 gals trying to
answer questions and explain the rules.
I wish I had t~me to learn more about
all departments and the rules and
responsibilities of each, but at this time
I am knee deep in trying to learn the
rules of the Building Department. Maybe
in ten or twenty years I'll have a good
idea of what is in the books.

WELCOME ABOARD, CHIEF BEARY
Chief William Beary stepped into his
position of Chief of Police in our fair
city on April 1st and on March 30th, a
meeting was held to introduce the Chief
to all employees. · He outlined the goals
of the Department for our growing city;
emphasizing service to the community,
discussing philosophy, goals, objective~
activities, image and so forth.
Chief Beary was fomerly with Commerce City Police
Department as their
Chief of Police and prior to that, he
served as Chief of Police in
Arvada.
Chief Beary also had numerous years of
police experience in New York before
moving to Colorado.
So once again, welcome aboard.

As the water rushes

We can see where they are starting on
our new shop now. Last week they put in

next month.

I understand work is progressing on
the Corrnnunity Building (temporary headquarters of the Parks & Recreation Department) but working conditions sound
somewhat different.
Remodeling dust is
a constant problem,
the restrooms (to
heck with building inspectors, I have
called them restrooms all my life)
are
still not working and the water is yellow.
It sounds like duty above and beyond.
Kay ,and F~ed Wilson,
longtime residents of Thornton, on York Street, are
leaving the City for travel and retirement.
I haven't talked to Kay for a
long time, but in a way I will miss her.
She never presented me with any problem
that was simple but every city
needs
someone like her,
just to keep them on
their toes and thinking.
A beautiful note:
Mary Kay Hayden

BOWLING OFFICERS SELECTED

1·have had some interesting comments
on the iast issue of the paper, on other
than the errors noted elsewhere in this
issue.
A single gal said the City Employee
Directory was great but she wished we
had noted the marital status of each
male employee. I was not surprised when
a male employee suggested_ that we should
have included the martial status of all
female ~mployees and the editor has only
one comment: No comment.
I added my personal comment on the
facilities by the switchboard and got in
to trouble by not writing my comments
correctly. Honest, I don't use the men's
room, but do use the ladies room and it
also does not have shelves, etc.
I think the Xerox machine has a real
personality.
I thought it only stopped
working when the paper was about to be
run, as it did on March 14th, but found
it also stops running anytime it's faced
with anything important and lengthy that
needs to be out on time.
Ask the gals
in the City, they can tell you about how
it feels to tell the boss the report
won't be ready.

At a_recent meeting of employee bowlers, the following officers were selected for the forthcoming Summer Mixed League; Al Smith (Util. Eng.), President;
Connie Swain (Util. Office), Vice-President; Barbara Taylor (Util.
Office),
Treasurer and Bob Donaldson (Planning),
Secretary (who by the way says he will
not accept the suggestion that he wear a
mini-skirt to be in line with the job).
The league, scheduled to begin WEDNESDAY
June 19th and continue for 10 weeks, requires 8 teams of 4 bowlars each, with
the cost to each bowler around $2.50 per
week, part of which will be used to purchase trophies and end-of-season party.
Non-employees will be permitted to bowl,
with the restriction that only 2 be permitted on any one team. Interested persons should contact any of the above
officers on or before May 17th, at which
time an organizational and rules meeting
will be held.
Watch for the details in
the next issue of the City Chatter.

Editor's Note: My sister broke her leg trying to learn to ride her son's motorcycle
and was in a cast for sometime. When she told me most people don't realize how complicated a broken leg makes life, I challenged her to write a story for the paper.
Her husband and 4 children, ages 8 to 17, all pitched .in to help in the running of a
busy household, but there were problems, which she outlines in the following story.
SO YOU BROKE YOUR LEG!
The accident has happened and you are taken to the hospital and finally end up
home with a cast encasing your leg from your toes to your hip.
Yo~ endure the comments of friends and relatives on how a 41 year old woman, a mother of 5 (grandmother to one) broke her leg learning to ride a motorcycle.
The entire family makes adjustments and the days go by.
The persona 1 problems.
you face are many and new to you.
You find you can't carry anything heavy. You can't sit on the toilet straight.
The sheets on the bed can't be tucked in because they weigh down your toes. You
can't take a bath and you can't drive your car. After the first couple of weeks you
get around better and are able to move your cast without help.
Depending on the type of person you are, you can get very depressed and begin
to feel sorry for yourself, and only you can solve the problem.
You have a lot of
time to think, and you remember things you could have done for others who have been
laid up and didn't. You appreciate the many things people do for you.
If you have always been an independent and active person, you find it very hard
to get used to asking someone to do things for you. Life takes on a new perspective
and you have a better understanding of other people and you eat a little humble pie.
As time goes by, everything you learn to do is really an accomplishment and you
are as proud as a small child.
Then comes the big day.
The cast is coming off.
While you have worn it all
you can think of is when it is off I can do this and that and so forth.
When it
does come off, you find you can hardly lift your leg, let alone walk on it. So home
you go, to exercise your leg and foot and get the muscles to working again. Painful
but worth it.
Ten days pass and you take your first unaided steps.
Word of advice------stay
off motorcycles or suffer the consequences.

brings to this City a wealth of experience, having held similar positions in

Chief Beary was selected from over 77 candidates for the
position. Chief Beary was also recently

We welcome Chief
Beary to our City and look forwird to

HERE FOR A VISIT

BITS & PIECES FROM THE POLICE DEPT.
Changes are being made so rapidly at
the Police Department, one wonders from
day to day what will be "new." The Communications area sports wall to
wall
carpeting, electric locks on the doors
and a large map. Although those responsible modestly ask that they not even be
mentioned for their efforts,
it seems
only fair to name a few.
(Those I know
about, that is.)
Larry McGlothlin did a very "professional" job of laying the carpet and Sgt
Allen spent hours shopping and working
in the Dispatch area; painting, pounding
and improving.
I understand that Sgt.
Rickenbrode did the work and shopping on
the electric locks.
From all of us---Thanks.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Our Police Department now has several
new officers.
We're very happy towelcome one and all.
Also Margie Veselik
now has joined our Dispatcher team and
to Margie, --- welcome.
