CONSTRUCTION OF EAST DENVER
MEDICAL OFFICES ON SCHEDULE

l

...,

_1

Construction began last December on a new Kaiser-Permanente Medical
Offices building to serve Health Plan members who live or work in east
Denver and Aurora. The new facility is located at 10400 East Alameda
at South Havana Street near Aurora, and is expected to be open for patient care in early 1977.
The new outpatient medical facility will include offices and exam
rooms for 48 full time physicians of the Colorado Permanente Medical
Group. In addition, there will be a wide range of diagnostic and treatment support services such as x-ray, laboratory, pharmacy and optical
dispensing.
General medical and specialty departments to be located in the new
east Denver building are internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology,
general surgery, pediatrics and radiology.
The two-story, 68,000 square foot structure will have an exterior of
brick and smoke-tinted reflective glass in a contemporary design. The
floor plan will feature a modular arrangement of doctors' offices for
maximum patient convenience and will include adjacent patient parking
for 215 cars.
With the opening of the building in early 1977, the primary care
departments of Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics/Gynecology and
Surgery will be moved from the Franklin and Tammen Hall Medical Offices
to the new East Denver location.
Remaining at the Franklin Medical
Offices will be the Departments of Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, ENT
(Ear, Nose and Throat) and Optical Dispensing.

BITS FROM THE POLICE DEPARTMENT
We are anxiously awaiting further developments in the progress of
our move to the other end of the building.
Hopefully, this move will
be a big morale booster, as we will not face the overcrowded conditions
we are now having to live with.
We look forward to better sanitary
conditions, ample room in which to conduct police business
and better
storage areas ready to house
the many items now floating aimlessly
around.
It will be extremely pleasant to actually have a workable area
in which we, as employees, can help exhibit a better public image;
one
becoming a high caliber police department.
Captain Baldwin was beaming as he received not one, but three cakes
for his second anniversary with the Police Department.
We would like
to take this opportunity to extend congratulations to this man for making this an upgraded professional department.
He is tremendously involved in all phases of
the department and has shown genuine interest
in solving any and all problems that might arise. We all firmly believe
that Captain Baldwin does eat,
sleep, breathe and live the Police Department;
so we ask you,
"When are you going to take a break?"
Hopefully, your trip to the FBI Academy will provide you with some rest and
relaxation.
Captain Baldwin will be leaving in July for approximately
three months to attend the academy in Virginia.
we also hear

We hear your car needs new tires;

BLUE CROSS/BLUE SHIELD RATE INCREASE
Effective June 1 Blue Cross/Blue Shield will be handing down to the
City of Thornton a rate increase for medical coverage.
The Blue Cross/
Blue Shield of Colorado Corporation requested a rate increase last year
which was approved.
Again this year they requested a second rate increase, and the
State
Insurance Comm issioner preliminarily refused;
then later granted the increase.
However, the way the City of Thornton
contract reads, rate increases can only occur in September of each year.
The State Insurance Commissioner canceled all
Blue Cross/Blue Shield
contracts for group coverage for 9,000 groups in the state of Colorado.
The
increase in rates will take single coverage from $28.90 a month to
$32.13
a month.
The
family coverage will go from $74.10 a month to
$79.58 a month.
The City, in preparing and approving the 1976
budget,
did not plan for any rate increase of
this
type.
However, since the
City did commit to 100% coverage of Blue Cross/Blue Shield,
the City
will absorb the increase in costs instead of passing it on to each employee.

MEDICAL OFFICES TO SERVE
NORTH DENVER

May 3 marked a new era in the
history of the Personnel Division
of the City of Thornton.
Now we
are three! The newest third to be
added to the Division is named
JoVonne Fitzgerald.
JoVonne is
married to Jerry and together they
share responsibility for Brian.
JoVonne worked for the State before coming to Thornton. She is a
charming lady, and we are pleased
to welcome her to the City of
Thornton.

A new outpatient medical office
complex in Westminster, with support facilities for clinical laboratory, x-ray, pharmacy and physical therapy, has been purchased by
Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of
Colorado. The new medical office
facility is located on the northwest corner of 112th Avenue and
Huron
Street in
the city of
Westminster.
It is estimated that the new
facility will expand the Health
Plan's service area to include
Boulder and nearby communities for
the first
time since
KaiserPermanente began serving Colorado
in 1969.
About ten
thousand
of the
Plan's seventy thousand current
members will be more conveniently
served by the Westminster location.
The new facility will bring the
option of HMO membership to thousands of people in the Boulder and
Brighton areas who have never had
an alternative health plan like
Kaiser-Permanente
available
to
them.

NEW PERSONNEL ASSISTANT

NEWS FROM THE FIRE DEPARTMENT
Yes, the Fire Department is still alive! The department will start
its annual home inspection program beginning June 3.
We will be contacting residents in the city offering to inspect their homes and leaving fire prevention literature.
This is a voluntary program by the
residents.
Testing procedures have begun in the department to fill the positions
of Fire Lieutenant and Fire Engineer. This procedure should be completed and the promotions made by the early part of June.
Also, the
department bids farewell to retiring Chief Carl Nelson. A dinner was
held Friday, May 21, at the Capri Motor Hotel. Chief Nelson was one of
the first paid firemen in the City and the only Chief. He has given
the City 22 years of both paid and volunteer service.
Congratulations to Don and Linda Oliver who are the proud parents of
a new baby girl, Jennifer Dawn, born on May 15 at St. Joseph's Hospital
at 8:12 a.m. Both mother and baby are doing fine.
If anyone is interested in going to the El Jebel Shrine Circus,
please contact Ray Bury at Station #2 for tickets. The circus is June
12 - 15.

EVIDENCE RECOVERY UNIT
The Police Department recently put into coro.mission the ERU (Evidence
Recovery Unit), which has been implemented to provide necessary crime
scene equipment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with an officer trained
to use it. The Thornton Police Department is the only police department in Colorado fulfilling the recommendation of the President's Commission on Crime regarding use of police officers in the actual use of
crime scene investigation. This is usually done by detectives in other
departments. This new program should aid tremendously in the solving
of crimes in the Thornton area, as on-scene investigation often is the
key via photos, prints and casts to apprehending suspects involved in
crimes.
Such cases to be investigated would be burglaries, rapes,
robberies and other important cases where evidence can be readily
gathered. We, in the department, are enthused about the unit and sincerely hope all Thornton residents will take pride in the fact that the
department has taken positive steps to improve police service with a
high degree of professionalism.

FESTIVAL DAYS PLANS NEARLY COMPLETED

•

•
•

Have you ever seen a "Donky Softball Game?"
If not, your in for a
real treat. This comical version of one of America's favorite sports
has been scheduled as the opening event for Thornton's Annual Festival
Days, beginning Saturday, June 19.
To be held at the Thornton High
School stadium at 2:00 p.m., this event pits man against beast in a
battle of determination and stubbornness, and it's anyone's guess who
will win. Don't miss it. Another outstanding and exciting event will
be "Almost Anything Goes," patterned after the ABC TV show of the same
name. The Thornton Centennial-Bicentennial Committee has challenged
the committees of Northglenn and Westminster to form teams representing
their coro.munity.
Each city will compete with 3/6 member teams in a
preliminary round, with the winning teams from this elimination competing in the finals.
Westminster will begin their elimination on
Thursday, June 24 at 7:00 p.m.; Northglenn on Friday, June 25 at 7:00
p.rn.; Thornton on Saturday, June 26 at 7:00 p.m.; with the finals
scheduled for 2:00 p.rn., Sunday the 27th. The only admission charge
will be on Sunday for the finals and will only be $1.00.
If you are
daring enough, we are still looking for participants to represent
Thornton.
You may contact either program chairman Jay Simmons (Police
Department) or committee chairman Bob Donaldson (extension 214) for details. A children's carnival will be set up in the Thornton Shopping
Center from Tuesday, June 22 through Sunday, June 27.
Plans are also
under way for the annual golf tournament, details of which will be announced later. Then there is, of course, the giant, spectacular Bicentennial parade on Saturday, June 26 at 10:00 a.m. The first float this
year will be one designed by Elaine Stockton (Bookkeeping), assisted by
Torn Fahrenbruch (Fire Department). This float, sponsored by the Thornton Centennial-Bicentennial Coro.mittee, will also be featured in Northglenn's parade the week prior to ours, and in Denver's parade on July 3.
Over one hundred thirty individual units will be represented in the
parade, scheduled to begin at the North Valley Shopping Center at 10:00
a.rn., proceeding north on Washington Street to Eppinger Boulevard.
This year's Grand Marshall will be Carl Akers, Channel 9 News Director.
Among the features of this spectacular will be the appearance of bands
from New York, Florida, Wyoming (the Troopers), and California, as well
as bands from the Thornton and Highland High Schools, and also from the
City of Arvada and Denver. Units will be represented from as far away
as Colorado Springs, Florence, Fountain and Central City, Colorado.
Nearly thirty-five floats have been entered, as well as marching units,
antique cars, clowns, military units, drill teams, honor and color
guards of all descriptions, fire and police units, youth groups,
equestrian units, and many, many others.
Miss Thornton-1976, Miss Colorado Teenager, and Little Miss Adams
County will also appear. Children's favorite, Ronald McDonald will
participate in the parade and will also make appearances throughout the
date at other activities. A sky-diving demonstration will be given at
City Park on the afternoon of June 26, with other outdoor activities
to follow at the same location.
If you wish to take part in some way,
contact Bob Donaldson at extension 214.
