'THE VOICE OF THORNTON EMPLOYEES'

PIECES FROM UTILITIES

Julr 30, 1976

WANTED TO RENT
One pickup with camper (preferably four-wheel drive)
for elk
hunting
season.
Contact Cary
Palmer on extension 245.

I had a pleasant two week vacation recently.
This was the first
time in three years that my husband had a vacation, so we spent a
week in Houston, Texas, with his
mother and sister and family. The
weather was nice.
We came back
and stayed at our mountain property at Crystal Lakes for a week.
I
almost became a lumberjack after
dragging the tops of trees and
piling the wood as we cut about
three hundred trees to clear for
our home which we are going to
build.
If you would like to buy
wood for your fireplace, we are
taking orders.
·
Freda spent a nice three week
vacation.
She, her husband and
granddaughter went to California
and spent a week getting acquainted with her two year old grandson
whom she had never seen. They
came home and spent a week fishing.
The last week she just took
it easy as Harlan had to go back
to work.
Marybelle Clair was glad to
have
her
son-in-law
who
is
currently living in Australia visiting, but it wasn't a pleasant
visit for him as his father passed
away.

For those of you who have never married off any of your offspring,
you have a real treat in store for you! Right, Doris? My youngest son
popped the question to the girl of his dreams some six months ago, and
it should not have been any big surprise when June came. So, how come
it was?
When he and Linda started bugging me for names and addresses
in January for the wedding invitations, I kept saying, "Terry, for crying out loud, you still have six months.
"Terry, . . . you still have
four months."
"Terry, ... you still ... Oh, my gosh! Why didn't
you tell me it was getting so late?!"
As parents of the groom, you really don't have too much to do, except
stay out of the way, smile graciously and agree with everything the
bride and her parents want to do. One thing you can do, if you so
choose, is give a party or reception the night of the rehearsal. We
chose to substitute a party the night of the wedding since the wedding
was at 11:00 in the morning and the reception at noon.
It had rained all week the week before, so we could foresee one
soggy wedding party, but the weather the day of the wedding was magnificent.
No. 1 son was to be best man. He was to pick up the groom at
9:30. He stayed at our house the night before so he would be close to
the action.
At 9:40, I was still trying to dress myself, my husband
AND SON NO. 1. He finally left our house 15 minutes after he should
have been at his brother's apartment. Ten minutes later, he was back.
He had never left the curb because his car wouldn't start! The groom
made his way to our house while the best man went for some gas. The
car finally started and they were off to the church. Gary and I left
in our car. Gary's mother, father, grandmother and grandfather, along
with my mother, were going to follow us to the church since they had
never been there before and they were afraid they would get lost. You
would have thought Gary was the one walking down the aisle. He was a
nervous wreck.
The way he was driving was making a nervous wreck out
of me, too, not to mention his poor father who was trying to follow us
out I-70 toward Golden at 80 miles an hour. Gary was in and out of the
traffic like something out of "Vanishing Point," and his poor father
was just doing the best he could do. We got within one half mile of
the turnoff (traveling in the fast lane, of course) when Gary whipped
across both lanes and onto the off-ramp. Needless to say, as we came
to a halt at the top of the off-ramp, we waved goodbye to three sets of
grandparents who were now headed toward Dillon.
We went on to the
church but Gary's brother, who had also come down from Cheyenne, volunteered to go back to the freeway exit and watch for the other contingent
from Cheyenne to get turned around and come back. They made it back in
plenty of time (muttering under collective breath about what they were
going to do to Gary when we got home again).
The wedding and reception went off like clockwork.
Although I was
ina haze and can't even remember half of the party that night, I'm told
that it also went off smoothly. Every time I think about these people
with five and six kids, I can't help but sigh with relief that I only
have one more to go. Even that may be one more too many!

NEW PURCHASING MANAGER
The City is pleased to welcome
its new Purchasing Manager, Mr. Azim
"Jim" Minhas.
Jim lives in Northglenn with his
wife, Qaisari "Kathy,"
and his
children, Sarah, 8 years old;
Omar, 7 years old; and Osman, 1
year old.
He started work with the City of Thornton on June 6.
Jim went to
school
at Punjab University
in
Pakistan where he was
awarded a
B.A.
in English literature, political economy and history.
At Manchester
University
in London, England,
he earned a degree in
business administration.
While living in Europe for some twelve years,
Jim traveled
extensively, living with different families
in each country for a few weeks
at a time.
In this way, he was able to not only visit all the European
nations, but was able
to meet and
learn about people in a way that no
tourist can.
(He said Denver reminds him a lot of Switzerland.)
For the last seven years, Jim was Director of Purchases at Koehring
Dart Division in Denver.
During this
period, he was
able to affect
savings
of a
quarter of a million dollars.
He would still be with
Koehring if his division hadn't moved to
Ohio.
Although offered a
transfer with Koehring, he liked the Denver area and its people too much
to leave.
(He said the people in the west are great.)
Before joining Koehring Dart Division, Jim was training manager at
General Electric Corporation in Denver for one year.
Prior to that, he
was
an accountant for General Electric Company in London, England, for
six years.
His main objective at Thornton is to continue to obtain high quality
service and merchandise at a cost less than we have been obtaining it in
the past.
In his short time here, he has already saved the City a substantial amount of money.
Jim is a great addition
to
our staff and a
very interesting man to talk to.
Welcome aboard, Jim.

RECREATION

The Recreation Department is very fortunate this summer to have
three very pleasant young ladies as office assistants. The first is
Kathy Sibayan, a senior this year at Highland High School. Kathy is an
"extreme foosball enthusiast" andwill challenge anyone. Ardyce Sittner,
a junior at Highland High School, is our resident Avon Lady, (which I
might add, does not mean she's a ding-dong). Connie Hentschel, a sophomore at Thornton High School, spends all her spare time in the mountains
and is a real outdoor girl. The girls are welcome additions to our staff.
Many thanks for a job well-done.
Congratulations to Ed Sweeney, one of the Recreation Department's
softball umpires.
Ed has been chosen to serve as Umpire in Chief for
North South Boys High School All Star Baseball Game. This is an honor
well deserved. We are proud of you, Ed!
Hats off to Joanne Baker, a member of the Parks crew who will be
leaving August 13 to join the United States Air Force. Joanne is really
excited about her decision. She plans on spending a week in the mountains before beginning basic training. Best of luck in future endeavors,
Joanne!

EQUALITY STRIKES AGAIN

The other day, Marv and I went over to the city pool to collect some
of our highly touted employee bennies; i.e., to cool our bones and bag
some rays at that establishment. We were greeted by an awesome scene
of fence-to-fence kids inside and a line outside of another thirty or
so.
"Not to worry," Marv says, "I checked it, and they say the 1 ine moves
fast.''
So, we waited.
Half an hour or so later, we were right there
at the gate, close on the heels of some young local residents.
"Halt," says the G.O.G.* "You guys are new here."
.
"Yeah," says Marv. "We're employee dudes, and we're gonna swim about
thirteen laps."
"Okey-dokey," says the guard, "and if you don't have them with you,
you can rent caps here at the desk."
Now, being good, City Council-fearing employees, Marv and I debated
the cap issue for at least three seconds before fanning our noses at
that rule and opting for a little liqtiid consolation at the Coronado
Inn.
Now, we all know why there's a cap rule, don't we, folks? It's been
many moons sincefliey developed sophisticated filters for pools.
"And
what do you suppose those filters are for?" I says to Marv.
"Let's not be vindictive," says Marv, who is the original "gentle
giant" after two beers and a shot of tequila.
So, I agreed to let the
matter slide-- bygones and all that. You know, turn the other cheek ...
and, oh, by the way, any city employees are more than welcome to free
squash and tomatoes ona "first come, first served" basis at the Western
Hills Treatment Plant in the coming weeks -- provided you short-hairs
bring your bathing caps ...

At
budget time,
department
directors can become very creative
about justifying new increases.
The city of Clearwater, Florida,
decided
to capitalize on this
creativity and named all supplemental budget requests "BS Forms"
(for Budget Sheets).
The department directors seemed to appreciate
the humor. Now, it is not unusual
at budget hearings for a director
to ask City Manager Picot Floyd
which BS he would like to discuss
first.
