'THE VOICE OF THORNTON EMPLOYEES'

WORDS OF WIT AND WISDOM
If you can't blind them with
your brilliance, baffle them with
your baloney.
There was this knight who was
very brave, but a little strange.
While all the other knights rode
horses, he preferred to ride his
faithful Great Dane.
One night while returning from
a trip he was caught in a violent
rainstorm and sought shelter at an
inn.
The innkeeper hated knights
and refused to give him a room.
But when he saw the dog standing
there
soaking wet, his
heart
softened.
"I couldn't turn a knight out
on a dog like this," he said.
CONFUCIUS SAY ...
"Man who put face in punch bowl
get punch in nose."
"Chemist who fall in acid get
absorbed in work."
"Man who live in glass house
should dress in basement."

NEW FACES IN RECREATION
The Recreation Department is
very fortunate to have the tal~
ented services of Dianne Coleman,
a recent graduate from Adams State
in the
field
of
recreation.
Dianne has been working at the
center for the past few months on
and off due to two operations on
her leg.
Hopefully, it was her
last
operation
and she'll be
around for quite awhile.
Dianne
not only works in the center as a
receptionist and instructor, but
also as a "right ann"
on all
special events and outside activities.
Another welcome face around the
center is that of Gilon Johnson,
Jr.,
the new maintenance man.
Gilon began working right before
the holiday.
He'll mainly be
working late afternoons and weekends. We sure needed him!
With two
additions such as
Dianne and Gilon, the Recreation
Department is surely starting th~
new year off right!

RA IN, RA IN -- GO AWAY!

,

.r

As you know,
all the smart people go South, like the birds, in winter.
Now, the reasoning behind
this is to
escape the cold, miserable
weather
in the North for
as long as they can afford to stay.
Right?
Right!
Then, how come while all you people were basking in
the sun in
good old Colorado, I was dripping wet in "sunny" Mexico at least 50% of
every day we were there?
I tell
you, sometimes there just ain't no
justice.
However, since I am an adventurous
person, with a fatalistic
attitude, I
take almost everything
in my stride and make the best of
it.
It was warm and beautiful, so I figured,
"What's a little water,
more or less?" After all, when you are in your bathing suit, who cares
if you are standing knee deep in water or lying on a deck chair in comfort
having
the water come to you?
As long as I could keep my drink
and my copy of "The Choir Boys" dry, I was happy.
Although we did do
just
as
we
had planned, which was little or
nothing,
we did manage to see the pyramids,
the University and Mexico
City, in general.
We ventured forth to the subway on our own a couple
of days and were feeling pretty
smart about
ending up where we had
head~d.
The last time we ventured
forth to the subway, we got caught
at
a place where simply every
family
in Mexico City goes on a Sunday
afternoon and we decided to head home at the same time all those
families did.
We found out later that the doors work on a very simple system.
They stay open
exactly
17 seconds.
Now, if you use
a little
imagination you can see
the
situation we were in with about SO people

trying to get out the door and about 200 people trying to get in the
door in the same 17 seconds.
It was fto slight achievement, but with
stamina and persistence, we made it on, only to wish within the next
few minutes that we hadn't.
We immediately found out what a sardine
feels like.
Even if you don't have claustrophobia, you just can't
breathe with all those bodies pressing up against you and pushing you
this way and that. We thought we would never get off that thing
(alive), and when we did, we never tried it again.
We left shortly thereafter for Puerto Vallarta which really was the
high point of the trip.
It was lush and beautiful and we lucked into
the nicest hotel in town. We had our very own beach, rental equipment
for anything you want to try, comfortable deck chairs all over the
patio area and a patio refreshment stand within just a few feet.
Boy,
that's the life!
Only once did we even move far enough to get into
town. We made up our minds that next time we would go _straight to
either Puerto Vallarta or perhaps Alcapulco and just stay put for the
entire length of our stay.
·
One knowledgeable word of advice. When Montezuma seeks his revenge,
go tD the nearest drugstore in Mexico and tell them your long sad story.
They have medicine they dispense right over the counter that will stop
your problems like right now.
If you wait (and suffer) until you get
back, you'll have to get a prescription for medicine that's only half
as good and takes twice as long to work.
