WORK REQUESTS
a•void: to keep away from, shun
ver-bal: spoken rather than written
or•der: a commission to purchase, sell or supply goods
form work.

or to p e r

>

Mountains of memos have been written over the years stressing the
importance of putting requests and orders in writing, but it is worth
repeating.
Probably every employee is guilty of making verbal requests of other
employees.
Coming into work, leaving work, at lunch, passing in the
hall, or wherever, the familiar words:
"While I'm thinking of it, why
don't you" or "When you find time, will you" or 11When are you going to"
or "We need."
Promises are given to verbal requests with good intentions of getting
the job done -- and sometimes it works.
Unfortunately, most of the
time verbal requests are never completed.
Many things combine to make written requests and orders a must.
Scheduling of work is based on priority of importance and need, knowledge of exactly what is being requested, good recordkeeping, etc.
There will be times when a request or order must be given verbally
due to an emergency or special situation, but for normal day-to-day
routine, WRITE IT DOWN.
This request (in writing) is being made by the Building & Fleet Maintenance Division in order to help us, but every department can benefit
by remembering to AVOID VERBAL ORDERS.
Forms are available for work being requested of the Building & Fleet
Maintenance Division.

HUNKS

& CHUNKS FROM STREETS

June 20, 1977, was a very unfortunate day for Don Borquez and his
family in the death of his mother.
We of the Street Division would
like W extend our deepest sympathy
during this time of sorrow, and if
we can help in any way, please feel
free to call upon us.
I would like to quote a paragraph from "The Prophet:"
Only when you drink from
the River of Silence shall
you indeed sing.
And when you have reached
the mountain top, then you
shall begin to climb.
And when the Earth shall
claim
your limbs,
then
shall you truly dance.

MOSQUITO CONTROL AREA REFERRAL
The Vector Control Department is endeavoring to maintain control of
the mosquito population in and around the heavily populated areas of
Thornton.
In order to accomplish this, we are attempting to control
all areas supporting the growth of mosquito larvae.
These areas are
typically areas of standing water with some vegetation.
We would appreciate your help in bringing to our attention any areas
of this nature that you may be·aware of.
Thank you for your cooperation.

FIRST AID 'TREATMENTS'
According to the Edmonds (Wash.)

rub her arm above her hand.
... for fractures -- to see if the
limb is broken, wiggle it gently
back and forth.
... for head colds -- use an agonizer (sic) to spray the nose until it drops into your throat.
... for nose bleeds -- put the nose
lower than the body.
... for snake bites -- bleed the
wound and rape (sic) the victim
in a blanket for shock.
... for asphyxi~tion -- apply artificial respiration until patient
is dead.

PRESS RELATIONS TIPS

BITS FROM WATER TREATMENT
The Water Works would like to welcome a number of newcomers to the
system.
They are:
Steve Rogers, our new water chemist, whom we have
anticipated a long time; Paul McGee, our new, temporary well field and
ditch rider who was sorely needed for the weekends;
new operators are
Jim Gindelburger, Gordon Leak and John Price.
Both Jim Gindelburger
and John Price are at the Western Hills Treatment Plant while Gordon is
at the Thornton plant.
We now have a lady in the Columbine plant whom
I am sure most of you know -- she's Liz Miller and especially welcome
with her administrative and phone answering talents.
·
We also have three fellows who are cleaning and hacking away at the
deluge of weeds and dirt. They are Larry Simpson, Jr., Bradley Hartleben and Russ Armknecht.
They will be here part of the summer.
On the other side of the coin, we have lost two of our experienced
operators:
Jim Morrison has moved on to other pastures (hopefully
greener) and John George.
John finally got his wish -- he will begin
working in water maintenance for Denver during the day.
Imagine, no
more rotating shifts.
It must be heaven.
We wish them good luck in
their new endeavors.
Want a cheap thrill?
Try riding a motorcycle down the dirt road to
the Co 1 umb ine plant.
It's a real .h ear t - stopper!

As some of the "old hands" may recall, the initial set-up of a suggestion program was attempted a few years ago.
Such i program offers
potential benefits to both the City and the participating employees.
In an effort to get the program on its feet to stay, a Suggestion Review Committee has recently been formed to review and process employee
suggestions.
The committee currently consists of the following individuals:
Eric Pahlke, Public Works
Steve Young, Public Works
Ron Ewig, D~ilities
John "Mac" MacBeth, Parks & Recreation
Vince DeForrest, Police
The committee has already held a preliminary meeting and has established operational procedures as follows:

It is anticipated that the entire process should only take a couple
of months from initial submittal to implementation.
In order to meet
such a time frame it is, however, imperative that the suggestion be supported by detailed explanations and cost figures.
The suggestion form and any attachments should be either placed in
the suggestion box or given to one of the members of the committee. Suggestion boxes will be located in City Hall, the City Shops, the Public
Safety Building and the Columbine Treatment Plant.
The City ~!anager has already reviewed the committee's proposals for
operation of the program and has authorized awards based on the following schedule:
Innovative ideas or cost savings up to $1,000 . $ 50 Savings Bond
Cost savings in excess of $1,000
. . . . . .. $100 Savings Bond
The only way for this program to work is for you to participate.
If
. you have a good idea, fill out a form and submit it.
The Suggest ion Review Committee will take care of the rest!
