'THE VOICE OF THORNTON EMPLOYEES'

Au.&!!..~t__3_1_, 19 7 7

CONGRATULATIONS, EVELYN!!!
Evelyn Utterback received a much-deserved Employee of the Month Award
from the City Council on August 8, 1977.
People like Evelyn are too
often taken for granted.
Her latest feat was coming in to man the
switchboard on the Colorado Day holiday in order to satisfy the many
inquiries by the utilities customers about the new waker restrictions.
This is not unusual for Evelyn -- She has answered the call to duty
under the same type of circumstances before, when the telephone system
has failed over a weekend.
Her contact with the citizens under all
types of stress has always been appreciated by the City of Thornton and
especially by her co-workers.
We appreciate your everyday concern, Evelyn -- let alone the extra
effort you always seem to be able to come up with when you are called
upon.
Evelyn received her savings bond and the citation, as well as the
wholehearted congratulations from our City Manager, Jim Perry, and the
members of the Council.
Thanks, Evelyn, for an always good job!

UPDATE ON SUGGESTION REVIEW COl\flvIITTEE
Just to keep everyone informed as to the workings of the Suggestion
Review Committee since it was recently formed -- a slight update:
The initial meeting of the committee was held on July 7 at which
time 14 suggestions were reviewed.
Of this total, seven suggestions
were rejected by the committee on the basis of its review and belief
that the suggestions were not worthy of any further consideration.
This, of course, left the other seven suggestions as being in the status
of having enough potential for departmental review.
Shortly after the
committee meeting, the suggestions were forwarded to the involved departments with recommendations for further review and analysis.
The second meeting of the committee was held on August 4 at which
time five more suggestions were reviewed. One suggestion was forwarded
for departmental review, two were rejected and two others are being referred back to the employee for additional information.
The initial response to the Suggestion Review Committee's work has
appareritly been favorable and it is hoped that this committee and the
process that it has initiated will prove to be a viable part of the
regular City process~
Ariy6ne having suggestions should either utilize
the suggestion boxes that are either already instalred or will be insialled very shortly or should submit them to members of the Suggestion
Review Committee.

1978 PAY PLAN ADOPTED
At the-August 22nd meeting, ihe City Council adopted the 1978 pay
plan as presented to them by the Career Service Board.
This plan includes the salary schedules you received earlier this month for classified, uniformed Fire and non-classified personnel.
The classified
schedule includes a $66 increase at each step.
This results in a
variety of increases (for example, 12.7% if you're now earning $518/mo.;
6.5% if your salary is $1015/mo.; and 3.4% if you earn $1962/mo.).
No
changes were approved in fringe benefits; therefore, the City will continue to pay 100% of health insurance premiums.
There are still some questions being received about how to identify
what your salary will be on January 1, 1978. Here's how.
1)
If you are currently in Steps A through G, locate that step in
the range where your position is listed in the 1978 schedule and that
will be your salary.
2)
If you are currently at Step H, I or J, add $66 to your monthly
salary at the end of 1977.
That will be your 1978 monthly salary.
If
you are at Step H, I or J and your position was approved for an upgrade,
find the salary amount for your new range (same step) on the 1977
schedule. That amount plus $~6 will be your 1978 monthly salary.
The policy for bonus awards for 1978 w~ll be finali~ad_this fall and
will be covered in the City Chatter when approved.
If you have any
questions about your pay, please call Personnel, extension 251, 250 or
270.

HIGH PAY
She was on the committee to beautify the historic section of her
hometown and her civic standards were high.
But, in an absent-minded
moment, she emptied the ashtray of her car on main street and was cited
for littering. The judge fined her $29.
"That's exorbitant," she protested.
"Why, you levy only $15 for
running a red light which endangers life and property!"
Relenting, the judge withdrew the fine and sentenced her to four
hours picking up trash.
"Weren't you humiliated?" asked a friend after the job was over.
"The word is exhilarated!. When else have I earned $7.25 an hour?"

So far, this man

Everyone in the Sanitation Division would like to thank Carl

PROGRESS ON CREDIT UNION

In response to many questions concerning the new credit union, I was
able to obtain the following information during a telephone conversation with the manager of the credit union.
The Adams County Federal Employees' Credit Union held a meeting
August 8, 1977, and approved a change in their charter to include City
of Thornton employees.
The next step will be review and approval of
the change in charter by the National Credit Union, headquarters in
Austin, Texas, which will take from four to six weeks.
As you can see, it will be sometime in September before we will have
a firm answer on the credit union, but it should be worth the wait.

first asked, "What's going on at

"Nothing much is new -- except
that I seem to be financing a love

answered.
"Talk about the modern generation," commented the first, "Well,
I hope she's a nice girl."
.
"Oh, it's not a girl," replied
his friend, "It's a car!"

Tired of the constant disorder
in her sons' roo~, a mother laid

For every item she

At the end of the week, the boys
owed her 65 cents.

HUNKS

&

CHUNKS FROM STREETS

As I write this month's article for the Street Division, I think
about all the pros and cons I have heard in the past month about our
new pay plan. A lot of the employees showed up and gave their opinions
to the Career Service Board, and the only thing that we were able to
keep was our insurance.
We kept it by the skin of our teeth for this
year -- will we have it next y~ar? I heard a.lot of people th~t wete
not at all happy with the proposed plan get up and state their opinions.
But when the City Couri~il had theii operi meeting, why didn't the people
show up and give their statements then?
Not many people showed their
faces or ~ave their opinions, but the·same people that didn't bother
showing up will run around complaining about the new plan.
All I can
say is, it's not going to do any good to complain to each other; le~'s
get it together before it's too late.
As many of you know, Dick Gerbitz resigned this month.
Dick bought
a gas station and store in Hot Sulpher Springs.
We hope Dick makes a
good go of it. - If you go up that way, stop in and. say "Hi." I'm sure
you won't have any trouble finding him because his station is the only
main station in the town!
Well, another three-day" weekend coming up and I'm sure everyone has
big pla~s. If. yo~'re-drivin~, be careful! W~ want to see you all back
next week.
