THORNTON EMPLOYEE'S NElvSLETTER

.City Mgr's Report

The Main Event
The night is drawing nigh and
this year's Employee Christmas
party is turning into "The Main
Event" with a little help from
everyone.
Remember those hilarious
awards handed out last year?
Was there. one you thought someone in your department should
have received? If you can think
of an individual who. is deserving of a somewhat questionable
honor, let Pete at the Recreation Center know (ext. 265). He's
a new employee and just doesn't
know anybody well enough, but
he can sure keep a secret, so
give him a call.
Mark your calendars for Fri.
December 14th because that is
when this Main Event is taking
place. From 8:00 p.m. to 1:00
a.m. music from D1e40's, 501s,
60's and the contemporary sounds
of the 70's will be featured
a la Pat Downey and his great
disc jockey sounds. The DenverDowntown Holiday Inn is the
place at 15th and GlenArm with
parking available on the premises.
Tickets will go on sale at
the Recreation Center on Nov.
1st, $3.50/Co~ple and $2.00/
Single. There will be a cash
bar aBd lots of delicious horsd'
oeuvres to include Jumbo shrimp
on ice, chicken drumettes, and
chinese eggrolls, just to name
a few. See you there!!!!

Except for wrapping up, the
United Way Campaign for 1979 has
come to a close.
I thought you
might be interested in the results we obtained. At the outset
of the campaign, several cities
in Adams County were challenged
by the City of Westminster to
e~ceed last year's contributions
by at least 20%.
I chose not to
conduct the campaign in Thornton
on a contest basis, but had I done
so, we surely would have been in
the running for
first place
due to the fact that we exceeded
the contributions of last year
b~ 123%! Out total contribution
l~3t year was $1312.00. This year
it totaled $2,925.08. Our percentag~ rate increased from 13
to 20.3, and our average gift went
from $38.58 to $45 per participant.
I appreciate the time that many
of you took to view the slide show
and certainly your contributions
to help those less fortunate than
we in the coming months.
I also
wish to acknowledge the fine effort
of Sandy Kailey in coordinat.:_•ng the
fund irive, I think we can all
take pride in the outcome of our
United Way Campaign - 19790

We have had a little population
explosion in the Fleet Maintenance
Department. Chris Carpenter and
Rich Wynn, (both day shift mechanics)
have recently become new fathers.
Chris and his wife Debbie are
very proud to announce a new baby
daughter, Rebekah Kay, born Sept.
26th at 8:05 P.M. and weighing in
at 5 lbs. 10 Oz. and being 20" long.
Rich and wife are blessed with a
little offspring named Anthony Lee,
born on Oct. 2nd at 10:40 p.m., and
tipping the scale at 7 Lbs. 8 Oz.
and being 19½" long.
Congratulations to both Chris and
Rich!!
P.S. I wonder who takes the most
turns getting up at night?
One of our vendors came in the
other day, and during some office
chatter, came up with some real cute
memos to hand out to the customers
along his business route.
I thought
that everyone would appreciate these,
so I'm sending them along to you.
Below are listed the ones I liked
best.
I hope that these will cheer
you up, and keep your day going!!!
1. There are FOUR MAIN BONES in every
organization:
THE WISHBONES - wishing somebody
would do something about
THE JAWBONES - doing all the talking but nothing else
THE KNUCKLE BONES - that knock
everything, and
THE BACKBONES - that carry the
load and do the work.
2. BE ALERT! alerts are very popular.
3. A clean desk is a sign of a sick
mind.
4. Be nice to me - I've had a hard
day.

First of all, we would like to
offer our congratulations to Sharon
Brooke our Clerk II, for being nruued
Employee of the Month.
Sharon has
been in our Department since January,
1979, and we are very proud of her.
We are very happy to have Steve
Young back with us.
Steve has been
out with back surgery but has recovered and is doing fine.
We have added a new member to our
staff in Street Engineering.
Her
name is D~lphine Sandoval and she is
our part-time Clerk.
She will be
working mornings helping Sharon.
Welcome Aboard, Delphine. Also along that same line, we are finally
going to be able to fill our Project
Engineer position. We are very
happy to have this position filled
with Stephen Swanson.
Steve comes
from Gainsville, Florida, and is
looking forward to living -in Colorado
and working with us. He is due to
begin November 12 and we can hardly
wait.
As general information, we would
like you all to know that Public
Works has on hand 100 "=11' aerial and
topographic maps of the entire city.
We have approximately 73 up to date
maps for anyone who might need to
look at them.
These maps were made
as a result of a flight on Sept. 29,
1978. At that time 98 maps were nade
and already 25 of these are out of
date.
If you would like to see you~
City growing and changing come over
and take a look.

Questions & snswers
Question: What is the City's
policy in terms of controlling
growth of subdivision developments?
Answer: At present there is
no one specific set of policies
for the control of residential
growth. A residential plot
moratorium was proposed to
City Council and rejected.

Question: · ~,Jhat has been the advantages
and disadvantages of the Parks Dept.
being on a four day work week?
Answer: Advantages:
1.
Loading, travel, unloading and
clean up time was reduced by 20%.
2.
Coffee break time was reduced
by 20%.
3.
Ability to send seasonal workers
home on a rainy day, say Tuesday,
and still have 30 working hours
left in the week to catch up.
4.
Fewer workers per truck on any
given day, meaning the number of
instances where 2 or 3 workers
go together to do a job that one
or two could handle was reduced.
5. Workers were available during all
of the open hours at City Hall for
emergencies, meetings, etc.
6.
Having workers on hand in the parks
two extra hours per day reduced
vandalism.
7. Overtime was reduced.
8.
3-day week-ends diminished absenteeism for personal business.
9. Morale was increased.
The main benefit to the employee
was, of course, the ability to sched~le
three or four-day week-ends without
using vacation days.
Travel time to
and- from work was reduced (leave home
earlier; leave work later) as was the
resultant air pollution.
There were no disadvantages other
than some initial scheduling problems.
However, most employees were glad
to return to the five day work week
come winter as Winter's shorter days
meant leaving and arriving home in
the dark.
Further, there was no time
to do the small jobs around the house
during the long work days, thus they
were left until the day off which offset the advantages of the three day
week-end.
·
For the Parks Department, the four
day work week was a reasonable solution
to the growing season
(i.e. long,
surnner days), and the accompanying
related tasks.
The Parks Department
hopes to return to this schedule next
summer.

Twenty-seven City Employees and
their families enjoyed the hilarious
techniques of playwright Woody Allen
as they viewed his Broadway comedy
"Don't Drink The Water" on Sunday
October 28 at the Country Dinner

The audience enjoyed the antics of a spy

In order _to secure our Dispatch
area, the lobby window at the Police
Department will be closed off and a
bullet-proof teller window installed
for walk-in complaints.
Our Records
Section will be moved to the Conference Room.
A teller window will be
installed in
the lobby so that the
public will have direct access to
Records for copies of reports, etc.
1\ new rotary puwer file will also
be purchased for Records.
The Conrerence Room will be moved to the
present records area.
Everyone is excited about the
changes.
They will certainly enhance overall operations and provide
security for communications.
Several major changes are scheduled to take place within the Police
Department's Communications/Records
Division over the next two months.
As a result of a.busy study conducted
by Mountain Bell, we will install the
Mountain Bell Comkey 2152 System in
the Police Department and the Comkey
416 in the Fire Department.
These
new systems will replace the outmoded PBX now in use.
In addition,
they will reduce an alarmingly high
busy signal level to an acceptable
range.
This change will provide separate
telephone numbers for the various
divisions of the Police Department;
Police/Fire Emergencies, Admihistration. Investigations. Records,
Information and Ordinance Enforcement.
The Fire Department Administration will have new numbe r s as
well.
The Dispatch workload will
be reduced so that they can zero
in on their primary functions of
handling police/fire emergency
calls.
An information campaign will be
launched to acquaint Thornton
citizenry with our new listings.
