FROM THE CITY Mft,NAGER'S DESK
Not unlike the private sector, we in
municipal government also have our customers. Our customers are the citizens
of this city. Like any customers, they
have a right to a quality product, good
maintenance service, and friendly people
with whom to transact their business.
They must depend on us to provide
services which no other company can provide--protection of their lives and property, maintenance of the streets they

travel and the parks in which their
children play, even the very water they
drink. In return, our customers provide
the tax dollars to pay for the equipment
which must be purchased and the salaries
which must be paid.
Prompt, courteous treatment of our
"customers" is essential. It is good
business and goes a long way in building
respect and good feeling toward the City
government.

fron, the editor

Should a new employee take over the
editorship of the "City Chatter"? Perhaps
only a new employee is crazy enough!?!?
As yOur new editor (and still a fairly new
~mployee), I hope to meet all of you, and
to do whatever arm-twisting is necessary
to get your contribution to the Chatter.
Toddy Wobbema has done a terrific job
as editor for the past year, and I shall
try to continue in her fine tradition.
Looking back through previous editions
of the Chatter, I found this excerpt from
an early edition:
This paper is a continuing effort
by the City of Thornton to improve
communica~1ons between employees,
their departments, and the administration. We hope through this
publication to enable employees to
get to know each other better, to
more fully understand what is going
on from one department to another ...
This is your publication. This
endeavor will only be successful
if you make it so ....
James Castrodale
City Manager
June 30, 1972
This is your publication. The news of
your department and personnel is interesting to all of us. Please submit your
article, news item, classified ad, joke,
cartoon, recipe, etc., to me by the 15th
of the month, C/0 the Planning Department.

First of all, we would like to congratulate Eric and Barbara Pahlke on the arrival
of their son, Philip Brown Pahlke. Philip
arrived June 15 (which was Father's Day, by
the way). He weighed 6 lb., 14 oz. at
birth, and has since gained almost 3 lbs.
Make way Broncos!
Public works has been very busy with the
Street Division repairing potholes, and the
Sanitation Division picking up everyone's
winter accumulation.
And ... hot off the press is a new Refuse
Collection Schedule, Rules and Regulations.
It will be mailed out with the water billing
for the month of September, but anyone who
can't.wait can pick one up at the Public
Works Department.
Two of our recent Employees of the Month
came from the Sanitation Department. Mike
Ehrman and Mike Pustek, both Equipment Operators, w~re selected for April and May.
Public Works has added two new employees:
Dan D'Amico, an Equipment Operator in the
Sanitation Division, and Darl Kite, an
Equipment Operator in the Streets Division.
Congratulations to Bob Sanchez, Street
Division, who was promoted from Maintenance
Worker to Equipment Operator.
We would also like to welcome our summer
helpers--even though they have already been
with us for a month.

An item that cost $60.00 has been
taken from the Shop Complex.
The item stolen was an electronic
bug killer that had been purchased
by Bldg. Maint. for installation in
the lunchroom/office area. This
area is plagued by numerous flies
and mosquitoes and it was hoped
that this device would make working
and eating more sanitary and livab1e,
but the thief took care of that hope
since there is no money to buy
another unit.
Add this to the long list of items
that regularly disappear at the Shop
Complex. Standard practice says
lock it up or it walks off and sometime it walks off even if it is
locked up. Everytime something is
stole~ there is anger and frustration over the fact that nothing seems
to be done or can be done. People
seem to accept the fact that it
happens all the time. And it goes
on and on.
QUESTIONS: What kind of a person
steals? ·How do they justify taking
from the City and from fellow employees? If you found out who was
stealing, would you inform proper
authorities? Would you join them?
Or would you accept those time
worn excuses of It makes up for
low wages or they don't appreciate
me, etc? Where and when will it
a 11 stop?
11

'

I think we all would like to believe that one of these days, the
thief or thieves will be caught
and dealt with. Maybe then we
can get back to the point where
we can begin to trust one another
again. It's tough to work with
thieves. You wonder if it is
the person you work with or someone from another department.

For now it is just a real morale
breaker.

Utilities Engineering employees have been
on the move lately. Jeff Case, Gary Hill
and Bob Presley are all settled(?) in new
homes, and Bob Messervy and Chuck Maypole
soon will be.
We have three summer helpers in Utilities Engineering.
They are Carol Duran
on the Survey Crew, Melba Garzon in the
office, and Chuck Onorato, who is working
with Ike Clair.
Chuck just took the big
step and was married on the 19th. We wish
him and his new bride much happiness.

This year's U.N. Day observances in

Ms. Lindhorst termed the United Nations the best means available for the
resolution of major international problems
and expressed the hope that the 1980 observance of U.N. Day would be instrumental
in furthering understanding of the U.N.,
its accomplishments, its limitations, and
its potential.

The City's citizens shouldn't b~ surprised when they see selected officers
patrolling the neighborhood adjacent to
the Recreation Center on bicycles, and
wearing a polo shirt, Bermuda shorts, anci
matching sneakers as the uniform of the
day, warns Thornton Police Chief, Doug
Franks •

Ms. Lindhorst asked that anyone interested in helping with the program call
her at 288-1341, or at extension 219.

The program is being implemented as
part of a campaign for the officers and
the citizens to get better acquainted,
and for the officers to learn more, firsthand, about the areas of concern in the
Community.
