Vol. 10 No. 5 May 29, 1981 BUDGET REQUESTS DUE Budget forms were distributed in early May to those responsible for preparing individual area budgets. Completed preliminary budget requests are due back on June 5. FESTIVAL DAYS Festival Days begiris on June 4 and will run through June 7. Scheduled events include a rodeo, parade, balloon races, a carnival, and performances by both Waylon Such impressions are formed by both direct contact and observation. Those e~ployeei working outside, and subject to observation, should be keenly aware that their actions are viewed as representative of the City. Whether we enjoy it or not, being~ public employee makes us accountable to the entire community. Population has been set at 40,343, with 14,487 housing units. Jennings and Louise Mandrell. 1981 marks the 25th Anniversary of Thornton. The Festival Days Committee has worked long and hard to prepare a super celebration-don't miss it!!! CONGRATpLATIONS, DEVERE! The City of Thornton, in general, and Devere King, in particular, were awarded first place in a 1980 commercial vehicle contest in the "graphic effectiveness ·at night" category. Honorable mention was also given to Devere's design on City vehicles in the "graphic effectiveness during the day" category. Congratulations, Devere!!! �NEWS FROM: ODlJ0[10lJ□rn~ rn~@□~rnrnill□~@ 0. Gary Hill, our Chief Utilities Inspector, had quite a scare on hi~ last fishing trip: While driving in a snowstorm, he almost went over.the side of a mountain!!! With his truck balanced on the edge, he managed to get out and go for help. We're sure happy to have Gary (and his truck) home again! Monty Telitz is our new temporary insfc:(.tor. We are hoping to have a temporary drafter and a temporary surveyor for the summer months; plus filling the position of our ~ermanent drafter. This will bring our total number of people to eighteen .... don't know where we' re going to put every- · one. It will be cozy, to say the least. L.L. Jeff TerAvest spe~t t~o weeks vacationing in Nevada, California, and Utah, stoppihg in Las Vegas, Reno, ~nd Disney land, among other places. (Now THAT'S a vacation!!!) Paul. Turner is vacati-0ning in California at this time. We don)t know exactly what exciting things Paul will do. · Dave Eichorn, Oliver Lea, and Mike Labadie all celebrated birthdays in May. Walt Swank; one of our Equipment Operators, resigned this past month. Walt is going to be farming, taking care of his rental houses and running the store in Commerce City. P.B.· -2- �~- r~EWS FROM: Classified [pQDW[10~ w@rn~~ ~ Don Fields was in to let everyone know that he is feeling much better and anticipates returning sometime the latter part of May. That is, after he has fulfilled his surrmons for jury duty. We would like to let everyone know that Terry Rasmussen, Equipment Operatpr for the Sanitation Division, has gone home from t~2 hospital and seems to be in very good spirits. Terry lost his thumb in an accident with a refuse collection truck on the 8th of May. Much credit goes to Steve Young, Sanitation Supervisor, and Doyle Weeks, Equipment Operator, who w~re working with Terry at the time of the accident for stopping the bleeding and helping to keep Terry from going into shock wh i l e they wai ted for_ the Flight for Life helicopter to arrive. Lots of good luck wishes go to Terry along with the nearly $200 coliected for him and his family. Many thanks to a 11 of you who contributed with a special thanks to Bev Lane for doing a tremendous jo~ o~ getting the word out about the collection. And~ of course a very special recognition and gratitude go to Steve and Doyle. We are all looking forward to seeing Terry soon. We want to welcome our summer helpers. We have several summer employees who are helping us out with jobs that would otherwise be waiting at the bottom of the list to get done. Most of these people will begin.by June l, and we are happy to have them. · Special recognition goes to Steve Young, Sanitation Supervisor for being selected as the Public Works Employee of the Month fof the month of April. FREE DAY - BARR LAKE STATE PARK In honor of "June is Parks and Recreation Month," all state parks are hosting a free day on Monday, June 8th. The Division of Parks and Recreation for the City of Thornton in conjunction with other area recreation departments is offering a variety of fun activities at Barr Lake State Park on this day from. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m: There will be a fishing derby, scavenger hunt, and prizes, along with nature hikes. For more details, call ext. 265. 5 p.m. POOLSIDE FAMILY BARBEQUE ($3.00) June 26 from 5 to 8 p.m. at City Pool.
